What mods to do on a new 450x?

    by CB 450x » Sat Jan 06, 2007 8:32 am

I just got me an '07 450x for Chistmas and I've been reading threads on what to modify. What does the emmisions stuff look like on the Cali models? My bike has some wierd stuff on the right side of the cylinder and I have no clue what it is. This is my first stroker.

Welcome aboard! Lots of good people with a ton of info here. The crf's store has some great products.
As to mods I would suggest just riding it for the time being. There are some jetting mods and airbox mods that can really wake the bike up power wise and make it more responsive. Also you should really look at suspension adjustments depending on your weight and riding style/ability. Backing out the rebound clickers to soften things up for trail riding and setting the race sag. Use the search at the top right side of the page and you will find alot of info.
Use keywords like, suspension mods, jetting 450x, steering dampeners, air box mods etc.
Oh yeah to answer your question that cluster f%^&% on the right side of the cylinder is the "exhaust recovery system" or smog crap

Thanks for the help. I Have ridden my X once before the snow hit. It seemed a little timid compared to my buddies Ktm 450. I just want it to run good and to get rid of the junk I don't need. I ride both single track and alot of desert.

There is a never ending list of mods you can (and eventually will want) to do, but I would recommend you start with a couple of items that will be relatively painless.
Raise your fork tubes 5mm and set your sag. Open your airbox and re-jet (JD works well).

Ride it and the other things you want will come to you, but these cheap adjustments will get you at a better starting point in my opinion.

You need a needle holder for the new needle, the JD kit works super and gives you a great needle, jets and directions.
You need to do this stuff simultaneously, the airbox mod, the jet kit, and do away with the smog crap. It's not at all hard, and you'll give that KTM all it wants when you're done, a big difference.
    This'll help you :

This'll get rid of that ugly thing on your cylinder, and get rid of the "popping" when done with the jetting mods :

Most of us done all these things and are very happy. You will be too.

Utah right? I wouldn't think you have the CA smog equipment to deal with.

Yep, the dealer must have gotten the bike from CA. I checked out the photos for removing the smog stuff and I have it on my bike.

By the way has anyone used a K & N air filter on the X?

Are we sure not all 07' s have the smog equipment?
Or Maybe Ca. got backed up on bikes so they rerouted some Ca. models to other states?
When I look at Honda's website they have pics of the 06' & 07'. It looks like the 07' has the smog on the right hand side and the 06' doesn't..
Kinda hard to see the picture though.....

You'll be ready for the KTM ,no problem. You're going to be loving it.
If you do all of it,the jet kit,the fuel screw, the smog block off, it's not much money at all for the increase in performance you get.
Just do it all simultaneously, the jet kit,the smog block off, the air box mod. When you go on you rfirst ride when you're done you'l be all smiles.
The fuel screw wil make your life a lot easier, just make sure you get the spring, washer and o-ring off the original fuel screw and on the new one. Doug

    Raise your fork tubes 5mm

    Roady:
How does raising the forks 5mm help you? The higher the bars, the better as far as I am concerned. It it something to help the way you sit on the bike, or strictly for handling. I obviously have not got that in far in to my mods yet?
