    Gearing for California High Desert

    by Four-Fifty-X » Thu Jan 04, 2007 9:27 pm

    Going to re-gear next week...

I do a lot of riding in Johnson Valley: high speed whoops, sand wash, single track. What is the best gearing in your opinion?

13/49 works very well out here. Spreads the gears out a little, if you ride Johnson Valley not enough hill climbs to worry about a low gearing.

    gearing

    Four-Fifty-X,

I have not regeared, but was really struggling in the sand washes when my bike was stock. Since I did the airbox and jetting mods, I am tearing through the washes now, and I suck in the sand. I am hoping a Scott's and suspension will help even more.

Do you ride just in the OHV park (around the dry lake bed) in Johnson Valley, or do you venture out on some of the roads to Giant Rock and places near Old Woman Springs Road? I hear there is some major cracking down going out there. A new Ranger was added who lives in the area. Groups over 10 need a permit on the roads. It's good and bad. I liked the laid back atmosphere, but too many people doing anything they want are ruining it for all of us...but that's another topic.

I am pretty damn happy with the 13/49 I am running right now.

Still has the low end grunt and hauls rear without revving the engine too much.

    Sand......I LOVE riding sand washes.

Sand washes can be intimidating for the new or inexperienced rider.

Once you get them figured out though they are a kick in the rear!!!

Somebody (hint) should do a sticky on how to ride sand washes, speed, body position, etc.

we can do a session in the rocks for no extra charge.

How does March 31/April 1 weekend sound?

I still can't figure out what I'm doing tomorrow!!! Let alone March.

I'll put that in the calender and see if that works. Are you doing Cal Shitty in Feb??

I have to book my ride time WAY in advance, right now I am booked right up to the end of March.

Im sure I will make it out to the Pres weekend ride for at least one day, I have fri-mon off. I do have a commitment to take a person for an "endurance" ride at some point during the weekend. It is a guy that rides tracks and wants to start riding the desert......

As for washes, suspension doesn't help a whole lot. Stiffen up your compression a few clicks to keep the front tire above the sand.

A dampner helps a ton in the sand and you need to be on the throttle with the weight over the rear tire. Also remember to be smooth when transistioning the throttle from wide open to idle to keep the front end from diving down in the sand. Ideally that front tire shouldn't do a whole lot in the sand, you want the back to do most of the work. If you feel like your just skimming the front across the top of the sand then it's perfect.

I have a buddy that owns five acres just off of Joshua Tree and Starlight. I ride some sand wash and technical stuff west of Quail Bush. I also do quite a bit on the other side of 247, way out past Means...past the copper mine etc. I've done all the normal mods. The bike pulls 5th gear easily through the sand. I need some more speed, and a little more out of third gear.

PS Have you ever ridden the sand wash that zigzags? The one you can ride up the walls on? It's a blast.

    Gearing...

    by flyinturbo » Fri Jan 05, 2007 9:55 am

I ride everything from tight single track to 5th gear fire roads. I rode the first 100 miles of the bikes life with stock gearing, then put a 2 tooth smaller sprocket in the back while doing the JD jet kit. I've still got the stock exhaust (and wont be changing it) and I've left the airbox stock (and wont be cutting it either!). The bike feels a little lazier than it did with stock gearing around tight stuff, but it's easy to manage and has great top end speed (92 mph, as measured by my Vapor computer). I've got a 14t countershaft sproket waiting to go on, but I think I'll only put that on when I am not doing anything really tight.
