22mm offset clamps

I have read hear and other forums that running 22mm offset clamps helps handling.
Several questions:
1-what exactly does offset mean in this regard? Is it the distance between the plane of the forks and the plane of the spindle?
2-what is the stock offset? 24?
3-does the 22mm set improve straight line stability or turning?
4-what is a good brand?
Thanks.

I am having my suspension done at the moment. The guy that is doing it said that on the 2005 models (450X), he actually adds a spacer that lengthens the shock and raises the rear of the bike 10mm. He says that this makes a huge difference in the way the bike turns. I assume that the 22mm offset clamps do the same type of thing.

sounds like an inexpensive alternative
I was just impressed with the fact that my tuner knew the '05 450X well enough to address this deficiency through revalving. Have I adequately plugged House of Horsepower...? That is House, H-O-U-S....

I have them on my R and love them.
It's the center of the holes for the forks to the center of the hole for the fork stem.
I think it turns better, really super. It just seems to really 'bite', a more secure feeling while turning at all speeds.
Making this kind of mod you'd think would decrease high speed stability, but at WFO it feels great, though the top end of the R is less than the X because of gearing, it's really moving though ! I do have a Scotts dampener too.
If you're worried about having an unstable handful on your hands with 22's-don't.
The raising the rear end is a different sort of change though, and maybe it'll work great. On my X setting the rear sag at 3.5" was the magic number to me and a few other guys, though it was done just with the right spring rate and preload. Maybe X-Giant's tuner is on to something.
I've had Applied clamps and have now BRP's, both are beautifully made and I'd buy either again. Doug

Right on, when and if i decide to get the suspension done on my bike i will keep them in mind. I am pretty happy the way it is so im thinkin this will be one of my last mods unless i come up on some cash. ~ Scott

What your effectively doing is shortening the wheelbase and changing the rake or angle of the front end. Longer wheelbase more stable at high speed harder to turn, shorter wheelbase less stable at high speed easier to turn.
Stock offset on the 450x is 22MM.
22mm improves turning reduces straight line stability.
BRP, Applied, Pro Circuit are all good brands.

Forgive Smash, Doug. He's a man of few numbers, easily mixed up. more familiar with numbers such as 9mm, .243, .308 and the like.
