    air filter decsion

    by No. 9 » Wed Jan 03, 2007 1:09 pm

I am in the process of opening up the X and would like to know if the twin air system is worth the expense or can I get away with cutting the backfire screen out and using a filter with a fire retardant? what have you done? Yes the box opening will be accompanied by a JD jet kit for what I hope to be an eye opening ride once complete

I have the twin air cage and filter but you can definitely get away with just cutting the screen. The one thing I wouldn't do without is the Napalm screw.
Life's tough, but it is even tougher when you're stupid.

That is what I have and it works fine. Just use the NoToil to clean and oil it.

    This one will do:

daaaanng you guys are quicker than a pack of dogs on a three legged cat. the napalm screw is for ease of application I assume. Thank you for the link to the air filter on CRFs. I can assume the twin air is the one to use as it has a following. I am amazed at the turn around time with orders. I picked up the new t shirts and they were at my door in 2 days. Thanks for the response

    Yeah,

Like RR says the Napalm is a must have. You can be fishing for that hole with the stock wingnut forever trying to get it right. The Napalm has no threads on the end of it so it goes into the threaded hole easily and then you can pick up the threads.

they are quick...yes, the napalm is for ease of installation. the twin air powerflow system (see product reviews) is an alternative to removing the backfire screen and provides better sealing and easier installation. it's worth a look.

ken is that the full kit with sealing ring or just the filter and frame? I am working a budget at the moment still waiting for my ship to come in.

both are call Powerflow kits but they are different. The less expensive version has the cage and the filter and no sealing ring. The sealing ring version increase the space available in the air box. Both provide the same air flow but are completely different in terms of how they mount the filter in the air box. check out our product reviews of each of these and hopefully they will answer your questions.

Sorry Ken, but I'd personally recommend against the sealing ring. The amount of time it takes to install and the hassle of having to buy a special filter and the napalm screw not working isn't worth the price. Stick to the standard cage and most seem to be happy. That's the way I'd go if I did it again...

smash is correct...the initial install is cumbersome as you have to remove the air box from the subframe...which is challenging. once the air box is removed you have to separate the existing ring from the air box...which is challenging. then you are ready to install the sealing ring provided with the twin air. then you have to get the air box back in the subframe. once installed it works great but the incremental advantage over the standard cage-only version of the powerflow kit may not justify the cost or the initial installation effort. i too lean more towards the cage only version as well.

The cage only version sounds more practical for a start on a budget and I am not opposed to the idea that I will have to continue to grease the filter at the sealing ring which is not as expensive or time consuming as teh whole system thank you for the wealth of information it is a valued benefit to the site.

I run the stock cage with the screen removed. You don't have to cut it, just bend the tabs and slide it out. I also use no-toil filter and oil with no problems.

Same here, but I use the 35.00 Twin-Air filter with flame resistant liner. The one in the link.
