    Lighten it Up

    by fatty432 » Mon Jan 01, 2007 7:49 pm

I am looking to lighten my bike up a bit as well as improve performance. Jaws has turned me on to the JD Jetting kit which i am ordering this week. Any Ideas on new exhaust and any other ideas on this.

    Thanks guys

Some weight savings come from swapping out the stock exhaust and removing the battery, starter, and headlight. Adding an aftermarket exhaust is reasonable, but removing the battery and/or starter is a crime. These are what make the X. Most other weight savings (I believe) are expensive and difficult to come by.

I think you will find that most on this board are adding weight to the bikes in the form of protection (other than lighter aftermarket exhausts) such as bark buster, skidplates, and radguards.

just like he said, removing the Button from the x is harsh.. Without that you may have well bought the R model. When the guys with R's that haven't jetted yet are out kicking their bikes to death on a cold morning and you walk out pull the choke give it a few twists of throttle and let that starter take over you'll thank it. :D

switch the pipe out, that should make a huge improvement over stock. Alot of guys run the White Brothers e2, i run the MX4, and pretty much any pipe over stock is going to be an improvement. and after that you could remove the kickstand but i'd also rather keep that for when they're arent any trees to lean your bike up against. in Dirt Rider magazine they stated that swapping out the stock rotors for Braking brand Rotors saved weight along with a Renthal Chain and Sprockets.

personally, if i were you, rider weight loss is the most helpful and cost nothing. alot of the guys on this site should back me up on that - i've heard it here too many times.

Fatty, do yourself a favor. Get that kit installed, mod the airbox, etc and all of the other good advice you have received, then ride it. Give it a chance before you spend big bucks to save 6-8 lbs. The performance gains of the aftermarket pipes aren't all that much. If, after riding it for a while, you find yourself craving more performance, then get a Hotcams stage 1 (more low to mid power) or a stage 2 (more mid to high power plus some gains down low). You can do a bafflectomy on your stock pipe and get better breathing.

After getting your jetting and more air in the bike, the Hotcams are probably the best bang for the buck.

Like was said, most of us can lose more weight from ourselves than by throwing money at the X.

I don't know Bo, he might be on to something here!!!

No E-start means lots of kicking.

Lots of kicking means aerobic exercise.

    Aerobic exercise means weight loss.

    No E-start=weight loss.

I must agree. I've recently lost 22 pounds and it has made a VERY noticeable difference. I can't imagine how much it would cost me to shave 22 lbs off my "X", or what I would have to give up to get it.

when i forst got my bike the battery was not charged, dealer told me one good ride it'll be good to go. he kicked it over, i kicked it over, 3 kicks no biggie. got to ocotillo and 1,000 kicks later i was looking for a for sale sign, i even threw the damn thing to the ground. I swear i lost 8 lbs. that day and it was NOT a fun trip. keep the e-start, it doesnt start as easy as the R does, 8)

    I think I've stumbled

    by fatty432 » Tue Jan 02, 2007 8:54 pm

I think I've stumbled upon a group of guys with some humor that is as sarcastic as mine. As you can tell by my username I am no light weight but I'm working on that as we speak, I actually sold my R to buy the X, just for the starter. I was just looking for a way to get the x to feel a little lighter like the R. There is no way I'm losing the starter as my fat but can't reach the kick unless I'm standing on a rock or the bikes in a rut. (I plan on never crashing by the way). I have the jetting kit on the way and I will replace the tail pipe. I hope to get to know you guys well enough to brow beat you as well. I live in southern utah in st. george and there is some great places to ride here. Give me a few months to get a little lighter in the belly area and get a little better on the bike and I would love to invite a few of you up (or down) for a ride.

    As always

    Thanks for the advice
