what bike Should I buy? the X or the R ??

    by reeltime123 » Sun Dec 31, 2006 8:27 am

I just sold my 05 450R and am going to purchase a new trusty 07 crf-450 Red Steed, I am just torn between a X or a R , I ride a MX tracks about 60% of the time and woods the other 40% I am 38 and ride in the Senior class so I am no pro rider here even though I have been riding about 15 years. I really like the electric start and wider feel. Does anyone here have both of these bikes ?
    1. is the gearing that different on the X, and when riding on a track is the gearing too low or high on the X ?

    2. Is the weight diffenence between both bikes that noticeable when riding?

    3. I have a chance to buy a 05 CRF-450 X of the show room floor for 5 grand. Is the 05 as good as the 06 or 07 ?

    4. What are the + and - from each of these bikes??

Any info would be great guys!!!!!

    !

A brand new non california 05 X would be my choice . it won't have any smog crap on it and there isn't really much differance between any year X except that all 50 states got the smog crap on the later year bikes
5k is a good price for a BRAND NEW X
come on over to the dark side , you'll love the button
the X is certainly the better bike for trails . and if you aren't doing big air now the X is perfect .

    1) 25-30 lbs weight difference between the bikes.

    2) 2005 450x is a Great bike for the Price!!

If i was doing Senior MX, i would buy the R........ But the X can be riden in MX, if you don't mind the Xtra weight. Then, you'd have a awesome Woods bike with E-Start & Lights n Stuff..................

    Welcome to the site!!!

There are a few guys that have or have had both and can answer better than myself.

Dobent4 just changed from an X to an R because he spends more time on tracks than trails.

Nowazzu just changed from an R to an X because he spends more time on trails than tracks.

Mr. Smith has both, but I believe he rides them both on trails. (not at the same time, he's good but not that good.)

Send a PM to these guys if you don't get the answers you are looking for.

Yea I am leaning toward buying the X and removing the lights, kick stand, and changing the rear fener to one without a light, IF anyone here knows where to get one let me know, or If I can use a R rear fender that would be nice too But I don't know if that is possible, I think the The first thing should do is open the Air box and change the jetting and get an R exhaust system. I will reweld the bracket on the R muffler to fit the X sub frame. Or just gut the Stck Muffler, Would doing these things help out and make it easier to ride on a track??? Thanks for all the Quick responces as I am trying to make my decision and pick it up on Tuesday.

I did have an 05X,and now have an 07R,and I agree with what these guys are saying.
You give up nothing getting an 05X vs. an 06 or 07X ,it's a great bike, and that's a great deal. I sold mine for 4200 bucks with over 70 hours and a year and a half on it ,restored to nearly bone stock. My point there is that the X has great resale, righ there with KTM's and well ahead of WR's. The reason for it is people love the X and tend to keep them.
I do ride trails too, but really like wider, faster types of riding, and the R is great there, especially with a Rekluse and the 07 R's new power delivery characteristics.
Anything else though, and the X rules, you'll never regret buying one. Doug

I had both for quite a while, but my MX racing is pretty much done so I sold the R. I am the same age as you and find myself looking for trashed out trail rides more often now. I still ride my X on the track, but I am not trying to have the fastest lap times so the extra girth isn't a pain to deal with. In fact, after a while, you don't really notice it. The X is a worthy MX bike if you are looking for something to share track and trail time.

On the other hand, the R is a pure race bike and can be made to race on the trails better than most bikes can. The only disadvantage is the lack of the starter. If you rarely stall or don't have problems kicking over the R, then it is still a great off road machine (with some mods)

    No regrets here.

I removed the lights but have the stator wound for higher output and a Baja Designs kit ready for night duty. I run the Cycra Stadium plate in it's place. No mods are required for this. I also stripped the odometer off and swapped the front brake line to a steel braided R version.

AFAIK, there is no MX rear fender for the X. If you want to run the R fender, you have to swap the sub frame with the Rn but then you loose the battery storage and thus the starter. You can do that but you will have to use the R air boot, air box and number plates too. Not a lot of benefit IMHO, but you can do it.

As for the exhaust, you can use the R exhaust system from the 2005 M/Y R on any of the X models do date. Changing the exhaust, opening up the airbox, rejetting and swapping in the R cam will make you think you are on the R. Having the E-start is just an added bonus during a long moto when you stall. You just blip the button (no need to find neutral) and go before you stop rolling. I get all sorts of odd looks when I do that.

Get the X, and don't look back....

I would go with the R. My dad this past year bought a brand new 05 crf450x and liked it. However this year i started racing and he did as well. And now he is selling the X to get a R because the x is hard to ride on tracks, mainly because of the weight. so if you are doing more track riding than trail riding i would go with the r.

After reading all the replies I got so far , I am leaning toward the X See I have Purchased my 2005 CFR-450 R as soon as the 05's came out, I really enjoyed it But I never ran that thing out of 4th gear, and I could never utilize the power that that bike had, I would get arm pump just from hanging on too tight, heck with that being said, you will run out of balls before that thing will run out of power!!!, I race but Lets just say I aint doing no triples or 120 foot jumps and We have a Club down here in Louisiana that is called the SSR (senior Sports Riders) and when we ask the local tracks give us our own gate, that way we don't have a bunch of mid 30's or younger guys taking you out just for a better place, We do it just for fun and have quite a big following down here.
I have seen the the New KTM 450sxf, it has electric start, I have never owned a KTM, thay seem to be more of those in the woods than any other bike around here, as they have models built for hare scrambles and woods racing, even though the sx model is made for the track I bet it would be a nice but but it is costly.
I do however love me a Honda!!!! What are the must do mods I will need to do to my new X when I get it to give it more low end responce and pep????
