rejetting without taking the carb off

can I change the jets and the accel pump cover without taking the carb completely off?

    what are the steps?

anyone have photos of the things to do?

Do I gain anything by completely removing the carb?

One other tip that helps which is not mentioned in the instructional post. To access the pilot jet through the drain plug, it sometimes helps to remove the stock plastic front sprocket guard. That little bit of clearance gives you a better angle to slip a flat blade screw driver up through the drain plug hole to change out the pilot jet assuming the bottom of the carb does not rotate far enough to the left. If you are only changing the main, you can skip this step as you should be able to work a 6mm socket in there without removing the plastic guard.

Changing out the stock plastic guard / case saver for the Fastway case saver eliminates this issue once and for all.

    Getting to the carb:

Remove gas tank and seat. Top of carb can be accessed now to do the needle.

Rear subframe is easy to lift. Loosen clamp on rear carb boot, loosen top subframe bolt, remove two exhaust bolts, remove two lower subframe bolts.

Rotate subframe straight up and tighten upper subframe bolt to hold in place.

Loosen front carb boot and now carb can easily be rotated for access to bottom.

Or you could just loosen the two clamps and rotate it without doing all that other stuff.

If your are just jetting, yeah rotate and pull 17mm plug.

If you are doing AP cover(pulling float bowl) and AP mod, The extra 5 minutes to lift the subframe will save a bunch of aggravation IMHO.

FYI, it's pretty easy to change the main jet without even rotating the carb.

When changing jets, I always put a rag below the carb, because there are quit a few nooks and crannies the jet can fall into.

Last, while you're in the changing the main, I recommend snugging down the needle jet (9mm, I think). Before I snugged mine down, it would sometimes come out with the main jet. When that happens, it can be a little challenging to get the needle jet back in over the needle...
