    Left fork seal leaking...homemade driver?

    by Tattooart » Wed Dec 20, 2006 7:55 am

Well I figured someone here would know something about a fork seal. Anyways My brothers bike which is a 2006 450x has a fork seal leaking. I know we can change the seal ourselves without paying someone to do it. I have a service manual and I am just wondering about a driver. So here is my question does anyone know how to make a homemade fork seal driver or do i need to buy one of the motion pro drivers? Any help here would be great!

I have seen homemade versions using ABS or PVC pipe.

Tried the film trick by any chance? My '05 developed a nasty leak in the left fork just before the last KM trip. I went after it for five minutes with a negative and it cleared up.

Ditto! Did this for my 230, 450R and now for a KTM 200MXC. PVC pipe is perfect for it (and cheap.)

Tat, I have had several leaks that have all been cured by the "film" method. I use the .005 feeler guage to do it with. Pry the dust wiper down and then run the guage under the lip of the seal and all around the fork. Some oil will come out, but it's a very small amount. Besides, it helps flush any grain of sand out. Do this for a couple of passes and it may solve your issues without replacement.

It has worked well for me.

I have not tried that i told him to do it and he said he wanted to replace the seal. So now that I have you guys saying this he is going to try it and then adjust the level on the forks.

Jaws- thanks for the tip with the feeler gauge we will try this then I will let you guys know from there.
