Paul nailed it. Helmetcamera.com Great kits, they even offer a mini DVR now.

Try Hoyttech.com, also has a dvr compatibility chart for LANC controller!

Also look up helmet cams on Ebay you can gain a ton of info from the advertisers ;)

check out the twenty20 camera:

one of the GREAT advantages of this camera is it's CMOS based which means it draws very little power. as a result you can get up to 20 hours on a single 9v battery. this makes it much lighter, smaller, less expensive to run, and less likely to run out during a long ride.

the new 2007 version has increased resolution and better video quality.

also, if you can match any helmet cam with a LANC capable video camera with the remote this is a huge advantage. in fact, it makes all the difference in my opinion.

Just a heads up on the Samsung... I have read reviews that do not look favorably on the Samsung units. It is just an opinion, but if it were my money, I would go with the 20/20 or one of the ones suggested by Paul.

Ken, didn't mean to advertise for another company! I didn't even realize CRFSONLY sold helmet cameras. I've read some really good stuff on the Twenty20's. Do you have any video footage from the Twenty20's. I'm looking at getting a system for my brother.

Its a wired remote specification, Sony uses it and I think JVC uses it, there might be some others.

Here is the one I have, it has power on/off and record funtions:

LANC is a remote button that you can mount to strap for your hand or mount directly in your helmet. It works with a visual LED that gives you indicators as to what mode your camcorder is in. As you press the button, the lights change colors and flash at different rates to indicate that you are taping, on standby, camera's off, camera's on. It's also used heavily in the Skydiving community (where I got my first exposure to it.) Your camera MUST have a LANC connection to support it.

The advantage of the LANC controller is that you don't have to touch your camera to control it. The button does it all. As long as your camera supports LANC functionality...GET ONE! You'll love it. I have one, but it is setup for skydiving. Once I buy a helmet cam, I'll be getting another one for it. Well worth the money. I'm not sure if Ken has them, but you can google "Cameye2" and you'll get plenty of hits. You can buy the online for around $50 at any skydiving site.

Does any one have and or know of a good helmet cam that doesn't require you to plug it into a video camera?

To the best of my knowledge, there are no quality helmet cams that are self-contained. I tried riding for a while with my Sony PC-1000 mounted on the side of my helmet and it was WAY too bulky. Works perfect when falling through the air, but not for any kind of riding that may send you down to the ground.

You need something small and compact. Anything even remotely bulky will end up getting the snot beat out of it.

ditto on the LANC description. it's a must. i was out getting some footage today and it's such a PAIN not to be able start and stop the recording without opening up the fanny pack, unwrapping the camcorder from the protection foam, opening it up to find the pause button. LANC would have allowed me to do this with the push of a button that was attached to my jersey.

on the self-contained helmet cam....there isn't one to my knowledge either. however there are some all solid state (no tapes/dvds) digital cams. they are still low on the resolution and none that i know of offer LANC.
