First things to do on my new 450X

Can you tell me exactly how to detach the pink wire? I pulled on it, but it did not come out easily, so I wanted to be sure I was doing it right. What exactly does this do?

What are the tips for getting more air to the air filter?

I can't speak on the pink wire mod as I have not done it. I guess it bypasses or disables the rev limiter. I have seen instructions floating around on this site before. You should be able to use the search feature to find the instructions. It is supposed to be a simple mod.

The home page has a section of "how to's" to get you started on opening the air box and rejetting, if that is what you mean by getting more air to the filter.

I am sure the real experts here will chime in and offer you more detailed help.

    welcome to the group.

why do you want to remove the pink wire? lets back up some and tell us what you are hoping to accomplish and then we can help with some specifics.

i for one do not have the pink wire removed. i'm very happy with my X with the pink wire. with the air box opened up, free flowing air filter, jetted properly, and perhaps the exhaust opened up, the bike rips.

There you go. All laid out. Just remember that your bike is lean from the factory. Don't open up the intake until you add some more fuel. Lean/Detonation is costly. Do the JD jet kit if you can't jet the bike yourself. If you can then run a 168/67 or 170 main and a 45 or 48 pilot. Then cut up the airbox as you see on this site or per the Honda wrench report. After that work on the exhaust. I haven't personally tried the pink wire mod, but it's subjective to personal opinion. I've learned to shift before the rev limiter so I don't feel I need it. The pink wire accomplishes two things according to forklore.

1.) raises RPM rev limit by 500 RPM.

2.) changes the ignition curve to more closely match that of the R.

If you've been paying attention at all you'll notice a few manufacturers that have programmable or multiple ignition curves like TokyoMods. The curve may or may not be noticeable to you, just depends on your seat of the pants dyno. While some claim they can feel 1/2 horsepower I think they are full of ..... So your results may vary.

    pink wire

All I know is that once I opened up the air box, re-jetted and added a slip-on pipe, the change was so noticeable I know longer felt the need to look into the pink wire mod or even change out the sprockets. It has more power than I need and is perfect for desert riding (can't speak for trail riding as I have not tested it in those conditions).

Here's how to open your airbox, but only do it if you fix the jetting through experimenting or install the jet kit and following it's directions :

I could never tell for certain what the pink wire did besides increase the rev-limiter 500 rpms.
Regardless, the difference isn't at all dramatic, but the difference after opening up the airbox and fixing the jetting is a huge one, well worth it.

Forget the pink wire mod, you must have been lurking at Toilet Talk.
    Open the airbox
    Open the exhaust
    Trash the smog pump
    Rejet the bike
Add 200+ cc to tranny oil, (full quart)
Now add all the protection, bling, etc goodies you can afford.
Ride the crap out of it

    Trash the smog pump
Ooops, I left that out and it's very important to do away with that simultaneously with your airbox and jetting mods for the California bikes. Doug
