2005 CRF450R hard to start or no start

I just rebuilt my top end. Honed cylinder (in spec), new piston and rings, complete new Kibblewhite valves and spring, retainers, head machined by local shop and reassembled. Timing is good, I have looked at it 5 times at least. Bike just will not start. Valves are right on spec. as well as the decompression arm. Has spark new plug, new air filter etc. I took the carb apart, cleaned everything blow out all the jets and put it back together with new gas. It started after 4 kicks. I road it for 15 minutes, ran great idled good. Let it for 2 days now it will not start.

Before I took the carb apart I could not get it to start. Replaced the coil and spark plug lead, no change. Check the stator, good. Could it be a carburetor issue?

It could be a fuel issue , have you actually confirmed the AP is squirting ??? , have you confirmed the float level is correct ??? , and have you confirmed you are actually getting fuel from the tank to the carb ( the fuel valve may be bad) ... Have you tried pulling the plug , dipping it in some gas , sticking it back in and tried to start it ???

One last thing .... When you pulled the tank , is it possible that you got the fuel valve hung up on the power wire that goes to the coil ???? , it is very easy to get it caught and pull the wire off the terminal , it can sometimes actually look like it is hooked up , but just sitting there , and it will not start and you would not know it unless you tugged on it ..... it is a common thing when pulling the tank

I pull the tank, took off the petcock, clean everything but it back together added new 91 octane fuel. Tested to make sure fuel flows freely to the carb. When I had the carb off checked float level 8MM, squirts good into cylinder. Haven't tried dipping plug in fuel yet.

    Wires are all intact.

I will have time to give it ago again Friday. It is driving me crazy. Can I be off on the timing and have it run fine once? I will add photos of timing next go around as well.

    Thanks,

No if it started and actually ran fine , then crapped out , I would guess either fuel or electrical , the only way timing could jump like that would be if the tensioner broke , but you would hear a awful racket with the chain rattling .... so I do not think that is the issue

You might look at the stator .... I have seen then work intermittently , usually they just go out , but sometimes they will work , then not , and just because it has spark when kicking it over does not mean when it is under a load that it will give a good spark , if it is not a snappy blue spark , I would question it ..... , but pretty much you have timing/spark , fuel and air , and compression , that is about it , if the float is good and the squirt is good (hopefully it just misses the slide and does not hit it) , then the only other items would be timing or spark

Like I said , try the plug dip and see if it starts , if it does , then you can figure it is fuel related , if it does not change , then I would lean in the electrical or timing way ...

Don't try to over diagnose the issue , go step by step , eliminate each thing before moving to the next , that way , you rule out each completely instead of bouncing back and forth , if you try checking spark and fuel at the same time , sometimes , you end up missing something , or overlooking the obvious because you were not focused on each part of the system and one part hid a issue with another , and you end up skipping over something ....

So this morning I checked the timing and valve clearances, both right on. Tried the dip the plug in gas, nothing. After 20 kicks I gave up. This top end has 15 minutes of running time at most and had new plug installed.

So I thought I would start with the cheapest part. Went out and bought a new plug, put it in an it started up 2nd kick and ran great. I road it up and down the block several times 10 minutes or so.

Lets see if she starts tomorrow.

    Thank for all the help.

I have had brand new plugs in the past that didn't work or broke down when revved. If it starts playing up again it time to test the electrics or try another plug.

So it started right up and ran great three days in a row, so I'm calling it fixed.
