    06 CRF 250R blown engine

    by pucknutz » Tue Sep 08, 2020 11:50 am

Hello peoples, about a month ago I bought a rebuild project. And I got secondhand parts for the bike to hopefully just get in running. When I got it the casing got stabbed in on from connecting rod. Bought some parts off of a guy in town. When I first looked at it didn’t seem bad. But handed over to a mechanic buddy. And he is skeptic about it. I’m just wondering if anyone has an idea on what to do?

Welcome to the site !! \:D/

I guess it depends on what the bad engine needs ,and what parts you acquired and how complete they fix what is broken on the other , and what your budget is , and what condition the used parts are in

What do you know about the bad engine ??? , is the crank bad ?? ( did the valve hit the piston ?? , if so most likely the crank is toast , and also if the rod went thru the case , chances are ,everything is junk ,.... crank , piston, cylinder , head .... who knows) usually , a broken case from a rod letting loose destroys pretty much everything except the clutch and tranny .... if you have everything to complete the engine and make it run in what parts you acquired then you are maybe fine for now ,but no telling what condition the used parts are in , so again ,this door is wide open , so no telling if this will solve your issue and allow you to put it together and ride or not .... , if your budget is too tight to buy new parts , you might be in over your head in this purchase .... and may just be putting a band aid on a open wound that will continue to bleed until you fix it right with new parts ,the cases can be used , but internal parts , are usually worn to some degree or another , so you could pay for a used piston ,and end up with a worn out paperweight ,and still have to buy a new one ,so you just wasted that money ...

What I would do is buy what you can new ,and if you can't do the expensive parts , then and only then get them used if they are non critical parts like the cases or something of that nature , but be prepared to put some work or money into them to get them up to par ..... there is no way of saying , do this , or spend this and all will be well .... it just does not work that way , the result would be the same with a 2 stroke .....

You have to remember it is a 06 , so if you plan on selling it later , then you need to recoup what you have into it , if you have to replace everything , chances are , you will not make anything , and most likely loose the majority of your investment ,as it is only worth so much , say $1200 -$2500 max , so consider that before diving in , you can find a good "running" bike for that kind of money , it may not be the best of everything , but if you just want a cheap bike to ride for a while , then that might be the better choice .... nothing is impossible , it just depends on how much you can afford , and what your goals are and what you are willing to accept as "ok ,and how long you want to use it before needing to rebuild it correctly

i just took the engine out yeterday. not sure what it looks like inside yet. but as of now. its out and my buddy is gonna look over it.

picures of second hand casings. if theres anyway to add material that be great.

got a guy for most parts if need. i just want it runable and useable so i could save up money for a bike of showroom floor in about a year or so.

I would dress that out and it would be good to go. Jewelers files and polishing Arkansas stones.

Yea , the way you first explained it , I was expecting a hole in the case with a rod sticking out .... this is minimal damage , and wont affect anything running wise ..... I would replace Crank , ALL Bearings , Piston , and anything else obviously damaged , and do at least a timing chain , and a new gasket set ,and go ride ..... ;)

so in those pictures, according to my friend whos helping me, he says its sketchy because those nicks seem deeper then the pictures look apparently. im not much for mechanics. but if i smoothed it out as best i can and the area isnt uniform like the rest would it effect anything???

The depth of the gouges are not a concern if they do not compromise anything , if they were cut thru and into a oil or water galley ,that would be different , but that area , is more of a buffer area , and not a flow area , so cleaning it up should be good if there is no burrs sticking up , or holes into other areas ...
