Ticking sound in the top end

    by Justin1776 » Tue Jul 07, 2020 7:16 pm

So, my boys 2014 crf250r has grown a ticking sound at idle inside the unicam cap. I am thinking the compression relief but I am not sure. We shimmed the valves, that didnt last but an hour. Found out the valves stretched and had to replace the intake valves.
We have to pull the head off again because the head gasket is leaking antifreeze. (I am hoping I just pinched the gasket)
Anything I should look at directly before I go back together with it?
I am waiting on parts so I havent pulled the head yet.

Welcome to the site !! \:D/

As far as what to check , I would check the dowels to make sure that is not the source of the leak , these head gaskets are pretty good , and to get a leak right away , is usually a sign of a warped head or a missing or damaged dowel ..... That would be the first thing I looked at (unless you forgot to torque the head)

Also you can Bench Shim the head , so no need to wait to install it to adjust the valves , simply set it on the bench , do the "normal" procedure for checking lash and swapping shims by snugging down the tower with the cam sprocket marks level and the lobes facing back (2-0'clock) , then just remove the cam/tower , then install the head , then reinstall the tower/cam and chain . then all you have to do is put the valve cover on and spark plug and good to go
