    Hanging throttle help needed

    by Gskii » Mon Jun 22, 2020 8:13 am

Wondering if anyone can help me to correct a hanging throttle issue? (Not sure exactly what to call it). Bike is a 2005 CRF450R. When sitting in neutral if I just blip the throttle to rev it up a bit and immediately let off the throttle, the bike stays revving high for about 2-3 seconds before finally returning to normal idle speed. Sometimes it will die when it returns to normal idle. Also the header pipe started glowing like molten lava. Not sure if that’s because I was just sitting there for a while testing this or if it means the bike might be lean.

I’ve jetted it with a JD jet kit so jetting should be accurate. I also know it’s not the valves or head as that was done recently by a trusted mechanic. This is a new issue after sitting for a little while even after me doing some carb cleaning.

Also I know it’s not a stuck throttle tube because it returns back to normal but the bike stays revving for about 2-3 seconds even with the throttle tube back to normal.

Any help of how to correct this would be a huge help! Thanks!

Have you tried adjusting the fuel screw ??? , it sounds like it is lean , that would cause the throttle to slowly return to idle , if it idles then idles high and/or dies , it is also possible that the Needle Jet (the tube the main jet goes into and the needle sticks down thru) , is worn out/ovaled , even with a new needle this can cause a hanging idle since when worn it would act like the throttle is partially open and then closed as the needle vibrates around in it

But generally it is a fuel delivery related issue , so something is making it lean , whether it is a clogged orifice inside the carb , or a fuel screw issue (missing the O-ring or the O-ring put in before the washer) Did you put the floating slide plate in the correct way ?? the hole goes to the bottom

Thanks JimDirt. I didn’t know about the needle jet, I’ll have to check that. I’ll work on the fuel screw first and then go from there. I think that may be the problem as when riding today the throttle didn’t stick as much later in the day but idle was always high. I’ve never been great with carbs.

Yea , they are considered a "wear part" , usually if the needle shows signs of wear , chances are the needle jet is worn as well .............. I need to upgrade to a 19 450R so I can get away from the carb ..... I can't wait to get my new 450 in the spring (I could get it now , if I pay off my truck , I have the money to pay it off , but I want to save some money for other things I need , so most likely going to wait a bit longer)

I want the button ...... and better suspension ..... and more power ........... and EFI ................ and it would be a brand new bike :-~

So Jim you are telling us a new bike is only a want rather than a need?
What could you need more than a new bike!

It starts,it runs,it gets to where all CRFs can get to without the valve or valve plate dramas

New Teeth ..... :-~ , Dentures ..... getting worn out , so need a new set , the old ones cost around $1800 , that was 7 or 8 years ago ...... unfortunately , the bike has to come second , no matter how much I think it is a priority .... , that is what happens when you think Code Red Mountain Dew and Cherry Coke must be good for you because they have water in them , so you are drinking plenty of water ....... sugar water , so the teeth didn't like it much , now all I drink is actual water ..... took me about 55 years to figure that out , since I have only drank straight water for about 5 years now .... live and learn ..... sometimes , a little too late , also contributed to the heart attack and blocked arteries I had (still have 1 blocked) , so I eat better now as well ....

If it wasn't for the need of being able to chew food , I would just get the bike now ..... :-#
