    Gear issues

    by glove » Sun Jan 26, 2020 8:56 pm

I have bought a second hand 2013 CRF250R and I believe the motor was redone less than an hour ago.

When it arrived I took it for a ride just to run her in and get a feel for her. I have had many of these models and I absolutely love these bikes. But I am worried.

She took off well and I went through the gears but when I drop her into first, she seems to lock up and the bike stalls due to back wheel lock up. after about 30 min I found that if a lean her to the kick start side, she unlocks and the back wheel is free again. This persisted but didnt always lock up when going into 1st gear but something is very wrong.

    Any suggestions would be welcomed

    That is a strange one...

Assuming that when it is "free" the drive chain and rotation is normal. Again assuming - Since you sound like you have been around bikes I hate to ask but I will anyway - The clutch free play at the lever is set correctly not to loose and not disengaging the clutch when pulled in?
With those two items checking out OK - I would pull the right side engine clutch cover and have a look there. Looking for basket grooved, worn disc's or anything else that may not be in order.

Not much more that I can think of for easy things to check. Maybe check to see if the shift looks like it has been bent which can give you some insight to rather it is internal gear issues?

    Hi Neil.

    Thanks for the reply.

Yes, the drive train and subsequent rotation returns to normal once “free”. The clutch setting is correct and the bike pulls smooth and very strong all the way through the clutch release and gear selection under power is perfect.

I will be pulling the engine cover to asses the clutch and at that stage I will let you know if I find anything.

    Thanks again for the input.

With that said I would definitely be looking at the clutch itself for heavy grooving in the basket fingers and the disc's for wear.

Good luck. Look forward to hearing what you find,
