I was asked the other day why I didn't seem to have any trouble with crosspoint screws on my bikes as none were mutilated or rounded out. My answer was I use the right screwdriver. It is something I learnt years ago when Japanese screws (and bolts) were soft as butter. I have had my set for ever and they have always kept me out of trouble.
You should be using JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) screwdrivers. They do work on phillips and pozidrive screws as well and since they don't cam out the screwdrivers themselves last longer too. The best brand is Vessel (Made in Japan) and are available at good tool shops. What amazes me is so many dealer mechanics don't own a set. Some of the bike tool kits do have the bits so check they fit properly before replacing what you have. Pushbike shops that carry/ work on Shimano gear changers will also often have them for sale.
Hope this helps someone killing a screw on your bike or carby.
