    crf250r help?

    by skedrc » Thu Jul 20, 2017 7:17 pm

so here is the situiation. The bike is a 2007 CRF250r. I would guess the bike itself only has about 100-120 hours on it. It started eating up massive amounts of oil that was getting through the rings (or so we thought). The valves were shot anyways so we decided to send the head off to Fastheads and we ordered a new piston and rings. (Another important thing to mention is that the exsaust had a black film on it so we autmaticlly figured it was the problem. Over the past 2 days we have installed the new head (SS valves whole package) and the new piston. First, The bike is a pain in the rear to start, like kicking it for 10 minutes. YES the timing is correct, i triple checked. It isnt 180 or whatever as many people say, it is perfect. When the bike is running it sounds great, but the minute you go to ride it (first test ride after head cycles) oil starts spewing out of the breather hose for the transmission. We are thinking this is why it was using so much oil in the first place before we replaced everything. Also to mention that oil magically disapears from the engine side even though it isnt burning it. Im pretty sure it is the crank seal from what Ive read but i wanted to hear your opinions.

Welcome to the site !! \:D/

In the picture you provided , you are not looking at the crank seal , it is the one forward of that with the gear with the Flange Bolt on it (the one forward of the crank is the Balancer Shaft), generally when the crank seal goes bad it is the spring that goes around the seal that presses the seal lip on to the crank shaft , that gets weak or fails allowing oil to transfer from side to side , was your transmission heavily overfilled when you drained it ?? (what was left after blowing the oil out the overflow tube) , the only other explanation would be a bad case seal (the one in the middle of the 2 engine main cases) , but generally you can see the damage to the seal lip or spring , make sure when you remove the seal that you note the orientation of the seal to make sure you put it in the correct way

Yes, I realize that now. When I drained the oil, it didnt seem like the correct amount, probably about half of the correct amount due to it shooting out of the crank breather hose. Thanks for the info, My dad ordered all the correct seals and gaskets and they are on their way!
