Chain sitting high on sprocket teeth

    by Palermodude » Mon Jun 12, 2017 5:30 pm

Hello everyone- just bought a 2006 CRF230F and I immediately changed the oil and adjusted the chain which was too loose. Tightened it up using the snail adjusters and have both clicked at 33. The chain seems to be sitting a little high on the rear sprocket despite the right amount of play in the chain. Just wondering if this is normal or if I need to alter it. Thanks!

Welcome to the site !! \:D/

It looks like the chain is stretched , the only "fix" is to replace the chain AND sprockets , since a stretched chain will wear the sprockets abnormally and if you just replace the chain , it will wear out quicker than normal , and wear the sprockets even more , as you can see the "curve" in between the teeth is oblong , which means everything is toast , unfortunately , due to a lack of proper maintenance by the prior owner , its going to cost you a little extra for your new bike ....sorry.... :(

Spring for new sprocket bolts and nuts with the new sprocket. Keep the old ones as trail spares if the heads and threads are in good nick. There is never a good result if the sprocket comes loose from old bolts. Use a torque wrench on them and check them after a bit of riding. Enjoy they are a great bike!

Stay with the 520 chain they do last longer.
