    Help Please!!

    by DanLo » Thu May 25, 2017 6:23 pm

I am doing a complete rebuild of my honda crf450X engine (2007) and have found some troubling things. One of the arms of the clutch baskets is broken off. I found the tooth floating in the crank case. Do I need to get a new clutch basket? The wear on the basket does not seem bad. Can I weld it back onto the basket? Could I run the engine with one missing?
Also it looks like someone else was in the engine before me and it looks like the threads on the crankshaft are stripping on the flywheel/stater side. Does anyone know the thread size so that I could try chasing the threads? If chasing the threads does not work what is my other options? I hope that I don't need to get a new crankshaft just for a thread fix.

Welcome to the site !! \:D/

Unfortunately , i think the clutch would vibrate or oscillate with the fin missing as it is a balanced unit , same would go with Welding it , it would also throw it out of balance by the extra material ...Unfortunately , your only practical solution would be to replace it , new or used that choice is yours , but you will need to replace it ..sorry

For the crank end , its another bad issue , the threads might be able to be re-cut , but you have to be careful of the brass oiling tube in the end of the crank , if that gets damaged in any way , you can lose oiling to your engine , which will cost more than a crank , i am not sure of the thread size , but what you could do is take the nut to a local machine shop and see if they have a die that fits it , if so , then negotiate a price for them to give it a quick going over , i am sure they should be reasonable , have them do the nut as well to make sure the threads are not damaged also ...

Either way , i would not ride/run the bike till at least the clutch issue is addressed ............. Good Luck ... :(
