    Honda CRF450R - SHIFTING PROBLEMS

    by Arsenil98 » Tue Mar 28, 2017 10:34 pm

    Hi Everyone,

I Just got a CRF450, I had 2 run with it. My last run started to be a problem.
So it seems that I wasn't able to Un-clutch, starting the dirt bike and lever pin down. Pass the first, and the bike would turn off directly .I thought it was a minor issue, so I replaced the clutch wire and re-adjusted it. Start it again, pass first or second at no speed. It turned off automatically. I opened the disk casing, checked all my disk they seemed fine, no cracks or wear on it. I did put the bike on the first gear, and try to un clutch and push the bike... I can change the gear, but can't move the bike while pulling my clutch lever. I never felt with the bike yet...

I don't know where the issue comes from, it is my first dirt bike I used to race Z750's and had someone taking care of it.

I have all the tools for a full service, but I'd like to know what you think and what should be done.
I believe it's not disengaging when I pull the clutch lever.
Springs? SHIFT DRUM? SHIFT FORK? or something else.

Let me know, I'd like to get it ready for the season.

    Kindly

Welcome to the site !! \:D/

First you failed to mention what year the bike is :-k

More info is needed on how the clutch feels at the lever , does it have good consistent resistance when you pull it ?? , or does there seem to be a lot of slop or free play ?? , or any binding ?? , how does the cable look ?? , is it frayed in any exposed areas near the lever or actuator ??

If its not disengaging with the clutch pulled with the engine off and in gear , it could be a few things , even a cold engine can do this , though the bike should move , it will have some drag , but the wheels should spin freely on the ground , even on loose dirt , after the engine is warmed up , the clutch should be able to be pulled and the bike move fairly easily with it in gear , but there will still be "some" resistance , first i would remove the cover again , and look very closely at the clutch basket itself , if it has notches like in the picture below , then the basket is worn and needs replaced ,the surface showing in the picture where the clutch plates set between each post should be smooth without any ridges , as that will cause the clutch to "drag" or "grab , the other could be adjustment of the cable , either at the clutch actuator or at the perch or on the cable adjuster itself (the cable adjustor is near the lever but on the cable itself) , also you need to check the Steel Plates and the Clutch plates and make sure they are within spec (if you need measurement tolerances i can post them) , also have you put the bike on a stand with both wheels off the ground and checked to make sure the wheels are spinning free with the engine out of gear (neutral) , to confirm the brakes are not dragging and that the wheel bearings are not bad , as either of these could cause excessive drag

This is what a Worn Clutch Basket looks like , those notches === (like that) are not supposed to be there , that area should be smooth :
EDIT: Replaced Photobucket picture with IMGUR picture so it shows up now:
