Bought a nice used 2005 crf250r a week or so ago. Seems to run great after "fixing" a broken hot start cable and cleaning the carb a bit.

This bike has been used quite a bit and I'm going through it trying to fix all the little things. About the biggest issue right now is the side case with the oil filter and filter holder. At some point one of the bolts that hols the filter cover on was snagged and broken off. It took part of the case with it but does not leak at the moment.

After pricing a case I would like to epoxy and tap this one. Can the magnesium be tapped?

Was planning on buying the reusable filter and cover combo from the crf's only shop. Figure its a few birds with one stone: replace broken filter cover, get new filter that is reusable, and a bit of shiny stuff

You are on the right path. The new cover will fix the broken cover and since the cover plate is the o-ring seal that will keep you sealed. The broken part of the case is not a problem. That can be cosmetically dressed up but not necessary to function.

If the threads inside for bolting the cover down are stripped - that is a problem. If they are just slightly damaged you will be good cleaning them up with a tap. Take it slow and easy. If they are completely toast - that's another issue.

The likes of Devcon and probably JB weld could be used to fill the thread hole if badly damaged and redrill and tap. There are other products around to fix this but you would have to remover the cover.

No issue removing the cover. Needs a fluid change any way. Was trying to save the $150 for the cover right now. I have used a two part epoxy in the past called "pig" that sets up super hard and can be tapped. If I can find a used cover I'll buy it but most are within 20% of new so not really saving anything.

New filter and cap should be here early next week (thanks to crf's only) so we will see what happens. Going to try to 're-tap the hole but I don't think there is enough "meat" there.

Yea it looks pretty sketchy on getting enough of anything solid to make it hold up
