    2011 crf450x bad coolant overflow

    by jamie2011crf450x » Sat Dec 27, 2014 5:18 pm

hey guys, really looking on input on this problem im having with my 11' 450x. from what i can see the theres alot of pressure in the coolant system. the bike worked perfect since i bought it a few weeks ago, bought it from a close friend and he hardly ever drove it. today we were all ready to go for tour i started the bike to let it warm up for about 5-7 mins a bit longer then i usually would while i waited for the boys to gear up and put helmets on. the bike seemed to warm up fine then i jumped on it as we were ready to take off and gave it a quick shot on the throttle and then smoke started coming out from under the bike and there was a small puddle of coolant on the ground, i imediatly shut it off and you could clearly tell if was coming from the overflow tube for the coolant. as it cooled down we could hear gargling bubbling etc. after it was cooled we took the rad cap off and started it and it seemed fine until it heated up a bit then it started gushing out of the rad with the cap off. after this i loaded it up and brought it back to my shop to further inspect it. we drained the engine and tranny oil right away to see if there was coolant in the oil but both sides we clean, i havent done any aftermarket/performance mods to the bike, its all stock other than a twin air filter i just recently installed. im not 100% stupid with mechanics work and i know it can only be so many things. having said that the seal on the rad cap seems fine but wouldnt be the problem because the coolant still gushed out of the rad with the cap off. i cant see it being a water pump failure, but maybe? im not sure if these bikes have a thermostat possibly?

sorry for the long wind boys and girls i tried to be in detailed as i can. ive read on other forums that it may be running lean or the jets could be getting dirty. so i may clean the carb tonight but the dealership wont be open until monday so i cant start it or run it til i get to honda and get some more oil.

hopefully its not a bad fix to get it going again love the bike tons of power! if i cant figure it out by monday night i will take it to the dealership if i HAVE to. thanks in advance for and help or input any info will be applied imediatly. sitting here staring at it right now!!

These bikes are reliant on air flow across the radiator for cooling. No cooling fan so 5-7 minutes is way too long to sit and let the bike idle. Your cooling system did exactly what it is supposed to do. It kept you from overheating and doing damage. Second anytime you run the engine with the radiator cap off it will force the coolant out the open cap as soon as it starts to get hot. The system is required to be under pressure for the coolant and system to work.

You should be fine - In the future, let your buddies get ready and when their bikes are fired start yours and give it a minute to clear itself and get off the choke. Then take off easy and give it another couple minutes as you ride for everything to get up to temperature before hitting it hard.

thank you very much. i was very nervous something was damaged. topped up all the fluids tonight im going to give it a go tomorrow and watch everything closely as i ride it. seems odd that it would get that hot that fast it was -1 degrees celcius outside when i was warming it up.

i will do exactly what you said and see how it works in the morning and i will report back with what happens. thanks alot!

These bikes run very hot. Also if your jetting is lean that makes it even worse. I am surprized you did not notice the header pipe glowing red.
Make certain there are no obstructions or damamge on the radiators or louvers.

Good luck with your ride. I suspect all will be fine.

thanks for the input boys i took the carb apart last night the jets were fine everything was super clean. however when i was inspecting it my friend twisted the throttle and i got gas in the eye  ... its pouring rain today, so i only went down the road a few driveways until i was wet but all seemed fine and normal. if it stops raining later i will take it for a better drive. thanks to everyone. i will let you all know how its goes on a longer run.
    thanks to all!
