Every time I service the engine oil there are copper shavings in the stainless screen oil filter. does anyone with a similar bike see what I see at there service intervals? what bearing is the source of the material? How much if any is normal? How many miles /hours of none abusive riding should I expect to get out of the bottom end.
amsoil every couple rides since new.
Ive had the bike since new and have had stainless valves installed. bike runs great and always has.its plated and I got 17 inch wheels as well so I go back and forth from street to dirt. Thanks John from santa cruz,ca

Copper is not good , no matter how many or few miles you have and any is not normal after initial break in , lower rod end (where crank attaches to rod) is where they come from , usually not a issue with a X , before you changed valves , did one accidentally hit the piston ?? (valve float , dropped a valve , blown head gasket/hydro locked , etc), as that is how the big end gets hammered unless it ran dry of oil at some point

How much do you think it's gonna cost to replace the crank and bottom bearings?

To post a pic , you need a hosting site like Photobucket or Image Shack (what i use) , you make a account , upload your pic to it , then get the link to the image and copy/paste it in your post

My 450X is still on the original bottom end , no issues whatsoever

Doing it yourself , all you need is the crank kit , gaskets and flywheel puller and depending on how many hours/miles are on the top end , you might consider freshening up the top end (depending on your budget) while you have the entire engine torn down , though to do the top end you dont have to pull the engine , so you can do it at a later time if you need to , doing the crank you have to pull the engine , so while its out , its just easier to do it , so its up to you and your budget

Prices will vary , but doing it yourself you will only be out parts , so a huge savings in labor costs , it will be a few/several ($250-$700) hundred depending on where you get them , compared to $1500 - $2500+ for parts and labor depending on what you have done , Ken sells everything you need here , or you can go to eBay or anywhere online and get the items you need , then you will need your oven to heat the cases and your freezer to cool the crank (so the bearings slip into the case easily) , and slap it back together and ride (not literally)

thanks a bunch. Im going to check the filter again after a few rides and see how much material is there to get a better idea how much its generating during a normal ride.I just took the bike out of storage after a few years so im gonna let it go for a bit. thanks for your help.
