    crankcase breather oil

by bronz godz » Mon Aug 04, 2014 1:33 am

Just had bike serviced. had the shims replaced and now when I park the bike a pool of oil develops on the floor coming from one of the breather pipes. Whats going on and how do i repair it. its happening to both my bikes after their last shim service. 2005 and 2010 Crf 250x

Reviving an old question- but the only time I have seen this happen is when the bike was overfilled with oil.

My mechanics solution was to re route the breather pipe up to the top of the Radiator. Dosnt sound like a kosher fix to me

it can also come from air filter oil. if our air filter was oiled and not properly dried before installing the excess oil can run out the air box drain. so make sure you know what oil it is and that will tell you where it is coming from.

the "fix" being recommended by your mechanic is horribly misguided. the breather needs to be able to breath. leave the routing where it is or using one of these kits:

address where the oil is coming from but don't do as he has suggested.

There are also issues if the bike was laid down (in a crash) and left laying on its side or slightly upside down if laid down on a hillside , for more than a minute oil so , it can let oil build up in the valve cover , then drain from the valve cover breather and drain into the airbox via the breather hose , so that is another possible cause for the oil , but as Ken stated , try to locate the oils origin , clean everything up , and see if it happens again , then try to trace the route

Thanks for your suggestions. First thing is to get a new mechanic. then remove the 'fix'. It seems strange that it happened to both bikes straight after a major service.

As Ken mentioned , how was the air filter oiled ?? , was it a lite spray on oil , or dunked in oil and installed ??

If this happened directly after service , with no layovers/crashes , then it has to be what the "mechanic" did , either inadvertently or on purpose to make you bring the bike back so he could charge for more "needed" services to a unsuspecting customer , the only way it could be a engine issue is if the rings were shot on both bikes and they were producing a ton of blow-by , but the bikes would also most likely both smoke out the exhaust

The oil on the floor was crystal clean which makes me think it came from the engine which had just been serviced and not from the air filter. I'm not sure how the filter was oiled. The bikes were dirty when we came back from a ride so any oil from the filter housing dripping off the frame should have been dirty

You are going to have to clean everything , to make it oil free , and run them again , and as soon as you notice any oil , then try to locate the source , have you removed the valve cover to see if there was any alteration to the oil baffle that covers the vent tube outlet ??

Yeah, if it needed to be shimmed time to have the valve seats professionally cut and valves replaced. We offer this service if you have any questions.
