    Weird noise, need help!

    by R3COIL » Fri May 09, 2014 10:24 am

Hey guys, i have a problem with my 2004 crf250r. It makes a weird noise while riding on trails or up a road and i can't figure out if its my chain or my valves chattering. This is my first dirtbike and little things worry me. I've changed the oil and filter, looked at the valves and they were all in spec. The only way to describe it is a clacking or clicking noise. The front sprocket is pretty worn so i just don't know. I was riding with a friend and he noticed the noise when i took off at a super slow speed and when i was slowing down. Any help is greatly appreciated. :/

check your auto decompression system. often some oil or very light coating of very thin assembly lube will help. i recommend replacing the spring as a maintenance item.

Replace both sprockets and chain as a set. If your front sprocket is worn, so is the chain. The chain pins wear thin and the bushings around the pins will make noise as they rattle.

Thanks motosicko. I ordered a new front sprocket because the rear is fairly new, only two seasons here in maine on the sprocket but the front sprocket was stock though so it looks like hooks lol. I'll have all my parts tomorrow so i'll install my clutch cable and the sprocket, tighten my chain a bit, if that takes away the noise i'll order a new chain.
