Just wondering what all you guys like when it comes to oil, if you put the same oil in both sides or have favorites for each.

I use Shell Rotella T 5w-40 (Blue Bottle) Full Synthetic both sides

I used to use Amsoil , but i found it harder to find dealers that would carry it because the dealers really dont pay much different than anyone on the street , so not enough profit for them to carry it , and the price has become ridicules , it used to be $9 a qt , now its over $12 , Have not tried Maxima yet but i use other products by them and like them , but again , its expensive

Its kind of a crap shoot , it all depends on whats available in your area , or weather you order online , opinions vary as to what works best , and how frequent to change it , and what you can afford as far as change frequency and type of oil , etc , etc , the main thing is to find something that is JASO T 903 standard or MA , so it works with a wet clutch , then you can run it in both sides

In the Honda's, I have only run Pro Honda 4S in the motor, and Pro Honda HP Trans in the transmission side.

I have run Maxima full synthetic and synthetic blends in the Kawi's, was not overly impressed.

Ran Bel Ray Thumper Full Synthetic in the KTM for a while. It was okay, but I just could not get comfortable with it for some reason. Switched to Motorex Racing full synthetic and am happier.

I run Honda GN4 when breaking in new rings.

Same here, but 20/50 wt. Castrol is what I use in all my street, dirt & sand engines.

If they flame you - I'll go with ya-

i've used rotella t syn in the trans and didn't like how the clutch hooked up/slipped. a bit too slippery for my clutching tastes.

Hmmm , I have not noticed this , the only bug so to speak i noted with it was when switching from Amsoil to Rotella , i noticed the tranny shifted just a bit harder/clunkier when not using the clutch , but after the next change it seemed to smooth out and has been fine since and i have not noticed any clutch slippage at all , and i work the clutch hard in some of the single track i ride ...but good info to know...thanks

both oils have outstanding shear properties and work very well for the trans. the clutch feel is a personal preference thing.

Interesting note - Two of my bikes came with ATF as transmission oil. Gas Gas TXT250 Pro & YZ250. I switched the YZ to castrol 20/50 but I am running ATF in the GG.

If you think about it ATF really fits the description of what a transmissions go through and what is needed for lubrication and heat protection.

Just throwing it out there. 8)

I think (i could be wrong here) , that the reason you found tranny oil is because of them both being 2 strokes , most 4 strokes (except Honda and KTM) are the same oil for the motor side as well as the tranny , so you "normally" would not see it in a 4 stroke , but it makes sense , use tranny oil , in a tranny

Not sure if i would do it because i tend to shift mostly without the clutch so i kinda bang the gears so to speak (not really bang , but you notice the difference from clutch shifting to banging as far as how it engages)when shifting up or down , i do this trail riding and on the MX track ,i dont know if the tranny oil would give enough cushion for doing that a lot as opposed to motor oil , tranny oil tends to be pretty light weight compared to motor oil weight/viscosity

I had always used ATF in my 2 strokes to race with, it breaks down very fast. changed it every time I hit the track. its really nice to get the clutch to hook up. another one I used to use was royal purple, also broke down fast. (my opinion)I wouldn't use it in my CRF though as its my trail bike, I run GN4 on both sides at about 75 bucks a case. I run it because I run it in my daughters xr 50 also. its a great all around oil. clean oil changes every time and I like the clutch feel as it is.
