    CRF70 Harsh Shifting

    by 383bigblock » Wed Aug 23, 2006 6:12 pm

    Hello,
I've been lurking around a bit and decided to sign up for the forum. I have read in a post that someone was looking for a Takegawa gear set for their bike to solve some harsh shifting. I just picked up CRF70 for my son (2004 model) and I rode it around the block and when you shift from 1st to 2nd the bike lurches or grabs really bad. Is that normal or do I and the other gentleman have a bad clutch adjustment or something. My neighbor has a 2002 XR70 (basically the same bike) and it shifts smoothly without jerking going from 1st to 2nd. Any hints on solving this would be appreciated or info stating that this is expected.

    Thanks
    Michael :)

I don't own a 70, but I would check transmission fluid and if thats not it, I wonder if there is an auto clutch adjustment somewhere, possibly discussed in owners manual if you still have it. If not, wait longer, I'm sure someone else will reply to your question. Did you do a search on the topic?

I found this post, but nobody replied to it. Sounds like it is normal for the 70.

I've read about a Takegawa Close ratio gear set that gets rid of the awful jump from 1st to 2nd on the CRF70F. Has anyone tried this fix? Is it a real pain? Does it work? I'm a little concerned that all it really does is make 1st closer to second and not the other way around.
    Will I lose off-the-line torque?
Also, is the slight bog off the line in the throttle response a normal thing? My son and I are new to these new Hondas and could use some advice.

I searched on the topic and only found the article about someone looking at the Takegawa gears. I just received the factory service manual in the mail so I will probably go through all of the clutch adjustments and inspections to see if anything is out of the ordinary.

Thanks for the replys.....there's not a lot responders on this site.

We had a CRF70. They do not shift harshly. Something must be out of adjustment. As far as transmission fluid goes, it is shared with the engine. Try changing that. Use the 10W-40 Honda GN4. if some knucklehead put in a car oil or whatever, that could be screwing up the clutch.

    Thanks,

That could possibly be the case. I've got it running like a champ and smoothing out the shift will go a long way in building confidence in my son. Looks a like a drain and fill weekend. If that doesn't work then it down to a clutch adjustment. I read the entire factory service manual and there really isn't that much to maintaining this bike.
