Was the 50 fad a waste of money?

    by dirtdevil » Mon Aug 21, 2006 5:21 pm

My son has a tricked out xr50. Probably put $1000 into it. I know a lot of people with 50's that are finding out they can't sell them for what they're worth. Was it a waste of money and do you regret it in any way?

I put about 5 Grand into my CRF50, but I don't plan on selling it for a very long time and so far it has been worth every penny! I am very happy with it and the sweet thing about making a pit bike is that you don't have to put a ton of money into it right away...slowly put new parts on here and there and before you know it it will be completely done and not seem to have cost you as much or hurt you financially. Thats what I did! :P -HcMXgirl

To me everyone knows what ever you put money into you never get it out so to me my $4800 was well worth it and i would do it again but now i'm trying to sell it just because i know there is some kid or other adult like myself that likes to ride something fast and nice looking but will let it go for $2500 i was offered that a few times but at the time i wasn't ready to sell but now i'am this 1 guy wants to trade a 2002 CRF450 for it cause the 450 has to much power so YES its all worth it in the long run you look back and say my 50 was a sick rear bike i will post a pic as soon as i find out how

Hopefully all the mods are for fun because they are a very, very poor return on investment regardless of how much trick goodies are on it. Doug

i just bought a crf50. it has about $4000 in it. 80 kit. big frame. big fork. bike wheels. front disk. etc...

i paid 1200 for it. its not an investment you are going to make money on. its purpose is fun. and thats why people spend tons of money on them

    To me not a waste

I just tradded my 2005 CRF 108 stroker for a clean and i mean very clean 2002 CRF450 since the 450 had to much power for the guy and i wanted it for the green sticker bike so i can ride when its red sticker (other bike is a 2004 CRF450) both bike will last me a while and the guy i traded we he even said that it seems that the 50s are slowly fading out but he didn't care he just wanted a backyard racer so if you look at it this way it wasn't a waste of time just a fun investment that someone else will like

    Rigt,
And I sure didn't mean to come across as critical, sure they have poor resale as in a percentage of depreciation vs. real cost, but so what ?
I sure as heck like doing all kinds of trick stuff to my bikes because I like to, and if having a super trick 50 or 110 gives you happiness, go get 'em :D Doug

If your buying any kind of toy (dirtbikes, boats, etc) as an investment your never gonna make the money back. Toys are market driven and the market sucks right now.

Now if you buy a toy as a toy and treat it as such you'll get more enjoyment out of it. I'm not concerned when I scratch or bend something cause when I bought my bike I saw it as giving $7K away to have fun.

I don't think I'll get rid of my 50 clone any time soon. They may not be as popular as they once were. But I still enjoy the hell out of it!
