Help- XR70 out of commission-what happened?

    by rodsandreins » Mon Apr 13, 2009 9:28 am

So my son was riding his xr70, about an hour into our outing he feels/hears what he thinks is an impact to the left side of the case (no marks from an impact, so must have been inside), the bike starts making some horrendous rattling/grating noises, and loses power. He revs it a little, noise increases, and he shuts it down. Shifts into neutral and rolls fine. Kickstarter is frozen, no oil or smoke anywhere, spark plug looks fine, drained oil and it's clean, opened up the right side and didn't see any outwardly obvious problems with the clutch or kickstarter. There was one tiny metal shaving in there.
Others had suggested the auto clutch might have self-destructed, being a total newbie I didn't attempt to remove it, just thought I might see something obvious in there. But if it were the clutch, would we still be able to shift? I put it into gear again and back into neutral while I had it open to see things were moving smoothly... couldn't budge the kiskstart still, tho. Any suggestions on what's going on would be much appreciated! Thanks, Kris

Did your son happen to lay it on its side with the seat lower than the motor? My son did this on a crf100f and the kick start would not budge after a trip to the dealer they pulled the spark plug out and pushed through the kick start blowing oil out of the spark plug hole. We then cleaned off the spark plug and it fired up smoked a little and all was fine. If this does not work I'm sorry but I have no more suggestions.

Thanks for the suggestion- but no, thankfully he remained upright throughout the ride

Can you rotate the engine with the flywheel nut under the left crank case cover? Remove the spark plug to make it easier to turn over. Could have chunked a gear.

Maybe the flywheel came off? Shouldn't happen, but it might have. The alternative is that the engine seized up.
