Can I race on the 70?

My son is 9 and new to racing. His bike is stock, except for the exhaust. First race is tonight. We were at the track last night and all the bikes there were ripping while were creeping. I need to get his bike in race shape. Where to start? Like I said I have replaced the stock exhaust, plan on changing the front and rear springs, and adding the K&N Filter. What else can I do? What about the BBR Rev box? I have seen some kits offered by Powrell, thoughts?

I bought my son an '03 XR70 when he was 5. He's now 8 and still riding it. I never thought he'd wanna race it but he asked if he could last year. So I take him out there and he was the only 4stroke in the whole 50-65cc class. Ofcourse they ran circles around him for a while. I have added bigger jets, twinair filter, full power carb needle, pipe, BBR swingarm, BBR front springs and dampening rods and MSR bars. The suspension upgrades and carb tuning and pipe helped him a little but still couldn't compete with the 2strokes. It finally made a difference when I changed his gearing. Went to a 13 front sprocket and a 39 rear. It gave him lots of tork coming out of turns but noting on the start. So I went back to a 36 rear sprocket and got him to start off the line in 2nd gear. Much better. Now he's not ever in last place. Not because his bike is faster, but because his riding skills and training are above most on the track. Moral is, after all the $$$ I have put into it, it still won't hang with 2strokes. In order for him to start bringing home trophies it looks like me and Santa are gonna look into the RM65 for the next years race season ;)
