    Carb Gummed Up?

    by msudawg » Sat Feb 09, 2008 2:39 am

I have a 2004 CRF 50 and unfortunately hasn't been ridden over the winter. We cranked it up and it will run in full choke but when in half choke or run, it will stall out. I have been told it was that I left gas in it over the winter and the carb is gummed up. Does this sound right and if so, is this something best left to a bike mechanic to handle?
    Thanks.

Sounds correct with the idle jet clogged.
Can be fixed by yourself easily depends how mechanically minded you are.

Remove float bowl to clean own any residue and get access to idle jet.

Generally easiest to remove fuel tank, loosen clamp screws either side of carby an rotate to get to screws.

    Baffle out, Screens In

It starts,it runs,it gets to where all CRFs can get to without the valve or valve plate dramas

I went out this morning and made some adjustments to the idle screw and fuel screw. I tweaked it to a point that it will now run in half choke. It still stalls out when I put it to run. So with that being said, does it still sound like a gummed up carb? Will I do any harm to it by running it in half choke? Should I still clean out the idele jet?
    Thanks

Definetly clean out the carb first, remove idle jet an blow air through to make sure it is clear.

Don't run it with half choke as it will be to rich as you go up through the revs.
