I did a search, but found nothing with any repair.

I just bought my 9 year old son his first bike. He rides decent for a first timer.

Anyway, this thing has an extremely harsh 1-2 shift. I can see him shifting it and see his head get jerked back everytime between 1-2, 2-3 is fine. I have ridden it and it jerks me pretty good, too.

Before I dig into it, anyone have any ideas?

I have the same issue with my 8 year old on his 70. In the beginning it didn't matter much because we stayed in first. When we started working on 2nd gear I had him start out in 2nd and ride around like that since the shifting was so harsh.

But now that he is getting better and I am wanting him to shift through all the gears, I had to make sure he is off the throttle when he shifts becuase it really throws the tire around if he stays on the gas.

Get a 13 tooth front sprocket, it makes all the difference in the shifting from 1st to 2nd. And you don't have to remove a link in the chain too.

OK, here's what I ended up doing as a starting point.

I pm'd 383bigblock to find out if he ever figured out his problem. He kind of did. He needed to get his carb adjusted properly (his was a used bike, and the previous owner had the base idle set too high to compensate for an incorrect idle mixture). Between that and allowing the bike to completely warm up helped his bike alot.

This is where I started. The idle wasn't neccessarily high on mine, but it was a little rough. I let it warm up completely. I then raised the idle slightly so I could get a good feel for the idle mixture. Once this was done, I set the idle down about where it needed to be. I ran it up the street and back, problem is much better. I haven't touched the clutch adjustment yet, but at this point, really doesn't seem to be a problem.

The real test may be tommorrow, but more likely next weekend. I may give the front sprocket a try next, but I will post either way so the next guy has a starting point.

Went out this morning for a couple hours. Seems a properly adjusted carb took care of the problem.
