Prime Time Hare Scramble-Any advice for a first time racer

    by Propheteer » Wed Aug 22, 2007 10:35 am

I need advice bad. I have very few friends around who ride and the ones that do either aren't any good at it, never have any time or passion for riding or won't even consider racing. In short, none of them have any experience with racing.

Racing Enduro has always been a dream of mine but I never had an oppurtunity to do it until now. Earlier this year I thought screw it, I am not getting any younger and I want to throw in and race the Prime Time Hare Scramble at Metcalf in October to give it a try. Maybe someday do an actual Enduro race.

Anyway, I have questions about every aspect. Race formats, what class to start, bike setup rules etc.

I usually ride about 2 times a week and try to get in about 40 miles each trip at Metcalf. I ride a CRF250X and if there were somebody out there who would be willing to show me the ropes I would make it so worth your while.

I would ride C-class 125-250f class. Also when you hear faster riders bumping the throttle MOVE to let them go as soon as you can. I always move uphill side so I don't get knocked off a cliff. I heard one A-class rider braggin about bumpin off a lapper on purpose (of coarse my friends kept me off his @$$). Ride with in your ability and finish, ride till they tell ya your done!
You'll be suprized how well you do just finishing the race, and then if your pretty fast you'll place. Have fun!!!! 8) 8)

A few years back i raced a few SETRA hare scrambles. Like you i didn`t want to become pro or nothing, just a few of my buddys raced and talked me into it.

In SETRA they have a "light" and " heavy" trail class, light was under 250 cc, heavy was 250 and over. This class was for people who never raced before, and if finished in the top three you had to move up. If i just wanted to try it once this would be the classes i would look for, if not i would go for th C class which is next.

The only thing to prepare for is your endurance, the races are only 1 1/2 to 2 hours long. I thought since i ride that much playing around it would be no big deal. I couldn`t finish my first race. Just don`t make it a race, i tryed real hard the first hour, and was spent. just taking it easy your first race will help but it will still be hard to finish. If you`ve never ridden "tight" handle bar width trails before you`ll need to practice these, they will take all your energy.

They will have markers were the trail goes, so it`s hard to get lost. But if you see a bunch of people standing around watching be prepared for something ruff coming up. They wil have helpers at all the really bad stuff, so if you see a guy on sitting on a bike with a saftey vest you`ll know to be prepared.

Take lots of money, you`ll have to pay parking, AMA fees, race fees, and buy you numbers and background.

Sounds hard, and you might not enjoy it while your racing, but after you`ll look back as it was one of the funnest things you`ve ever done.

Ill be out there with you! Ive been racing D36 for 2 years now, and this will be my 3rd Prime Time HS. Ride C 250 4stroke, and have a great time! The first one will be an eye opener, but after a couple you will love it. If you are looking for someone to ride with, hit me up and we can train for the race. I have the same problem you do with finding someone to ride with. My Email is [email protected]. Let me know if you have anymore questions or wanna hook up and ride! Just remember, its just a 2 hour trail ride with 200 of your best friends! LOL!
