    Marty Smith RIP

    by Leardriver » Tue Apr 28, 2020 3:38 pm

One of the first motocross stars of the 70's lost his life yesterday, along with his wife, in their dune buggy at Glamis.

I am sorry to hear that, he was something special in his day.

    Oh damn...
Marty Smith was my favorite of all times. Seen him race and the Honda race team. Damn that's bad news.
The battles of Marty and Bob Hanna will go down in history.
Thanks for sharing the news even though it is very sad.

How did their friends in the dune buggy with them escape unhurt?

I don't know , they said they were going to update on what took place when they were in a better frame of mind .... I am assuming heads were hit on the rollcage since it looked like no one was wearing a helmet , or ejection from the seats , so many possibilities on what could have happened .... either way , a sad day for moto .....

Until moving I was really big in sand duning. Glamas is a crazy place. The entire Imperial sand dunes is a crazy place. Most fun you can ever have but incredibly dangerous. I have not read any info. on what happened but there is one spot where people go and jump this huge area between two dunes. Seen many off road racers there. Walker Evans even jumped it in one of his race trucks. Not everyone makes it and the crashes can easily kill you. South of Glamis is Buttercup and many, many get taken out of there by emergency helicopter. Not sure if that has anything to do with this crash but many people in the mega high dollar long travel rails try to emulate some of the others that make these insane jumps and it goes bad.

Same as Jim, Marty Smith was one of the main reasons I raced Honda's and loved motocross.

There is a nice write up in the AMA magazine this month on Marty Smith. Some old pictures that many of us will remember.
