Anyone put an 05-07 CRF450X gas tank on their 05-08 CRF450R?

I am looking for a little extra fuel. I bought a much larger desert tank and in the process of installing it, it is much larger, so much so, that I think it is too big for what I want. Doing a search, it appears that the 05-07 X gas tank is something like 2.26 gallons (PLUS a reserve of around .3?), but in 2008+, Honda went to a 1.9 gallon tank, which is the same as the R. If anyone is in the know, do I have my facts straight, and how much exactly does the "reserve" really add? and are there any special instructions I need to know when installing? (Im in process of adding larger radiators and rad fan for some trail use, so its good to do it "while I am in there"). Some might think that adding .37 gallons is dumb, but I found a tank for great price and it just gets me little more fuel and closer to my buddies riding KTM 350s that have around 2.5 gallon tanks.

Any help or insight is appeciated!!

As far as I know , the X and R frame cradle is different , the angle is different and I believe the width as well , from what I recall , the tanks do not interchange ..... I know for a fact they do not fit on the older (02-04) R's , as I tried ,and not even close ... you would be better off looking on EBay or somewhere and finding a IMS tank that fits the R ...

As far as "reserve" goes , basically there are 2 pickups in the part that goes into the tank , the short one is Reserve , the long one is On , the On does not have a screen that goes all the way down , so where the screen stops , is where the flow stops , the short one goes pretty close to the bottom , the difference is I am guessing 1.2 quarts , it is basically enough to get you back few miles , but it is not like you can go the same distance you went when you ran out .... , you "could" put the X pickup in the R tank and have the same result (along with the X fuel valve with the Reserve on it) , just with a lesser capacity , you won't be able to travel any farther , just when you run out , you know you have a little left to get you headed back and part way there ...

As far as the fan .... What were you planning on using for power ?? , the stator would not carry the load , unless maybe you had a Trail Tech or something that has a secondary output besides the ignition coil , only issue would be , I do not think it would have the Amp load to actually continuously power the fan under load ..... even the Spal fans take a large amount of current to run for just a few minutes , I have one on my 450X , and the power draw is noticeable

It sounds like you might be better off in the long run to find a 450X .... yea they weigh a bit more than the R (about 45 or so lbs more) , but I can run my X on a off road track like nothing , and still single track it with the best of them , and that button is so much nicer on a side hill than trying to kick it , especially if you had fallen and are now tired from picking the bike up , and now have to kick it several times
Or as mentioned , locate a used (much cheaper) IMS tank for your R ... I had one for my 02 , and it gave me about the same mileage as my X with the same size (3.2) IMS tank , which was depending on how I rode , between 80 and 100+ miles total compared to about 35-45 with the stock 1.9 of my R

The research I have done indicates that the X tank works on the 05-08 R with some minor trimming on the radiator shroud (at the end of the middle finger portion). Otherwise there isnt an issue at all.

The fuel line situation, thats kind of what I was assuming, the diagram shows 2 lines coming out of the tank, one obviously being submersed deeper than the other, so assumed that was the "reserve". So put a normal R valve on there and utilize all of the fuel instead of selecting one vs the other.

As far as fan goes, actually already been riding it with the set up a couple of rides, no problems so far. I have a LiPo battery in the normal spot under the seat. I only use it for the fan (and lights if I am riding short distance on street). It is big enough so far where I have been able to ride 3-4 hours and hasn't been totally drained just yet. The battery is fairly large capacity. It is wired in a "passive" set up where I run it, and then when I get home, I recharge it with the charger. Not hooked up to stater, etc... Got the idea from searching and finding people in similar situation, wanting a lighter trail bike but still using a fan for slow/tight stuff.

I run a rekluse, so having to kick it over on side of hill isn't an issue. The tank I got was a brand new X tank I got on ebay for under $60 (couldn't pass that up). I didn't want to go too large, as I don't want to make the bike too wide or feel too bulky.

That is great to hear about the fan/battery setup , I did not think any self contained battery setup would have enough to power a fan for any usable length of time , so that is good to know , you should post up the brand/model etc. so if someone else was wondering , they would have the info ... as any info added here , is always going to help someone else out in the same situation

And for that price on the tank , you would not have been out much if it did not fit , so congrats on that , and yea I had not personally tried a X tank on the same year R , only on a older frame , so that was all I had to work with , aside from what I have heard around the forums , as far as fitment goes ...

And if you did decide to use the X outlet , you would also need the X fuel valve , so it could accommodate the 2 lines ...... Sometimes it is nice to have that little bit of reserve , so you are not totally stranded if you do run out .....

cool, here is the fan. If you look close it looks exactly like the fans on KTMs, in fact some of the comments seem to indicate that it is same one. It is 2.2 amp, so the 5 amp hour battery, in theory, gives it about 2.3 hours of continuous run time (as we know, when riding, it is not always on, in fact, it is off much longer than it is on, so thats probably a good 5-8 hour ride unless someone is doing super extreme enduro and its always going)

I just put the normal filter/valve from the R on, that way I still get the 2.27 gallons, but dont have to switch it over to "reserve" when I go through the first bit of gas. Mock up on tank seems to be great, some minor trimming on shrouds. I guess it is kind of like the 450RX now days, basically an R, with slightly larger tank (and 18" rear wheel). Although, I still can't get myself to put a kickstand on it. Too many bad memories of relating a kick stand to a cheap bicycle or a heavy enduro bike. Plus, I don't want to gain the wt.

That looks to be the same fan I put on my 450X (I got mine on EBay)..... and just so you know , the 450X kickstand will go right on , but you need the footpeg mount as well , but I did that on my 02 and never had a issue with it moving while riding ... the only time I would take it off was for a race , as they usually made you remove it , but it never caused a issue
