O2 crf450r cam question help please

    by 02-450r » Sun Oct 11, 2020 6:43 pm

I have a 2002 450r and it seems like it doesn't have the low end punch i expected it to have. It has a je 13:5:1 piston , Web cam grind 943/921. And a dr d full system.. this is freshly rebuilt and valves are re done as well. Any ideas ?

Welcome to the site !! \:D/

Why did you change from the stock cam ??? , it has plenty of low end punch , I have the 02 with a 12.5:1 and the stock cam and 13/48 gearing and it has plenty of low end (stock exhaust , but cut down 4 inches to match the 05 muffler dimension) ... does it compare to my 2020 for bottom end punch... no , but nothing else does either ......

So did you not think the stock cam had enough bottom punch ?? , and if not , what is your primary use ?? trails ?? , if so , maybe a Hotcams Stage 1 would get you what you want ... though you would drop off on top end with that cam ( I have one in my 06 450X) it is a excellent low to mid cam , but peaks out much sooner than the stock cam does

I guess the questions are ,what is the main intent for the bottom end more than what you have ?? , (not sure of how the cam you are describing delivers power or how it compares to the stock cam)

What is the main use of the bike ( and what is it doing that you don't like , and what does it do that you do like as that 13.5:1 piston should give you plenty of bottom punch) that is causing you to search for a different cam other than stock ?? :-k

Thank you for you're reply. I bought the bike used and it had the piston and the cam already in it, so he must of changed it I assume. I'm not to familiar with the web cam and how it's suppose to perform . I do alot of trail and hill climb, with some track riding in the mix as well. If I'm in 3rd gear and nail it from a very low speed it doesn't react very well to it, now in 2nd gear there's no issue . Its like when im in 3rd gear I don't get power until a higher ram it feels like. How is the stock 02 cam suppose to be? I'm not to informed on it and how its suppose to behave. I know people swear by the 02 cam and especially ron hamps cam.

If I go with either the 03 or the 04 -06 cam will the swap out be a piece of cake? Like will the cam tower i have currently work? Auto decompressor swap right over ? Thanks

As far as I recall , all of them should be a simple swap .... if you are going used (EBay) then I would get the entire Tower/Cam assembly , just to be safe ..... but it should be (I just looked in my Manuals) a simple swap , as they all seem to use the same Decompressor system , which is what the difference would be (again , I am going by the pictures in my Owners and Service Manuals for the specific years you questioned) , but again , if buying used , I would always try to get the entire tower/cam assembly , and then you should be good to go ....... ;)
