    05 CRF450R Inconsistant idle

Hello all. I've seen a lot of info on this issue with the X-models, but not so much for the R's. My bike starts right up, cold or hot. Valves are in. Bike has been jetted to my altitude(5800-9000ft), and runs like a beast! Love it! BUT, I am constantly chasing my idle adjustment. Starts, warms up, idles fine. Take it for a ride, and it then idles WAY too high! Turn it down, and it stalls while in slow transitions. No mid-throttle lag, or any other performance issues. I'm thinking dirty carb, or aftermarket fuel screw. Am I missing something, or on the right track??
Thanks in advance! Love reading all of the good advice on this site!

Could be as simple as your throttle cable hanging up in the cable housing or at one of the throttle or carb points. With the bike off try snapping the throttle as you turn the bars back and forth to see if there is any binding going on. Before you do that test turn the petcock of and run the carb dry so you do not flood the engine by turning the throttle on & off which would be pumping fuel through the accelerator pump if the carb has fuel in it.
If all that checks out, you could be having a air leak issue and need to chase that down with some spray while running.
Hope that helps a little and gives you a few things to check.

In addition to what Neil mentioned , you might also look at the Needle and Needle Jet (Needle Jet is the long brass tube that the Needle goes down into and the Main Jet attaches to) , if they wear you will notice a inconsistent idle as the Needle will oval out the Needle Jet and cause a rich then lean condition which affects the idle

Looking at the Needle Jet you can't tell if its worn , but if the Needle is worn then the Needle Jet is also worn , but even if the Needle is not worn the Needle Jet can also be worn due to the fact that the Needle Jet is softer than the Needle so it will wear/oval out before the Needle shows signs of wear

Worn Needle:(you can see the wear just past the fingers , its a different color as its worn thru the Anodizing)
