I'm having some issues with the fuel pump on my 2009 (surprise, surprise. Towards the end of my last race there were a couple times were the bike kind of hesitated getting on the gas. I thought I was just running out of gas but thanks to an IMS I still had 1/4 tank. Now at idle it seems to idle kind of low then picks up a tad and drops again. I am going to ride it this weekend to see how it does. Are these signs of the fuel pump going out? What about the injectors? have there been any issues with those? The bike has been giving me tons of issues lately and the threats of buying a new haven't been working. Please help!!

So I tore the fuel pump apart and cleaned the filter. There was a little bit of grey residue in the bottom "bowl" where the filter is but it was very minimal and I don't suspect it was an issue. The filter did not even seem dirty or gummy but after putting everything back together the bike seemed to run better. I have no clue what I did if anything or if the filter just need a good hosing out. Ride this weekend will confirm my suspicions.

The fuel pump on the 09 has been updated. they put a vertical "sock" filter on the pump. you can also send you injector off to Fuel Injector Clinic and they will clean and flow test it. About $25 i think.

here's a link to the updated fuel pump:

also, i recommend you pre-filter your fuel:

injectors can and do go south. here's a link to a replacement:

Yeah ive known the 09 Hondas have had fuel pump issues. I guess im just not ready to accept it yet. Ive heard its rare for the injectors to go out. What symptoms go along with a bad injector? The only thing im worried about is forking out the 200-300 bucks for the new pump and that not being it. Although at this point I dont know what else it could be considering the bike has a fresh motor.

bad injectors typically leak fuel when sitting off which ends up in the crank and/or they do not flow well or are intermittent. most often it's a leaky injector.

I think I will do an oil change to check and see If there is any gas in the oil. That would point me to the injector as opposed the pump correct? If not then I could rule in favor of the fuel pump? As always thank you for the help!

it would eliminate that type of injector issue. one of the challenges that comes with EFI is these issues could also be electrical which is more difficult to diagnose.

Right. My other problem is that it only seems to do this later in the day (when there is less fuel in the tank). So its not even like I can take it to a mechanic and actually show him what's going on. Today I pulled the Throttle body off and checked the injector. It looked clean but that doesn't mean it actually is. I cleaned everything up and put it all back together and it started and idled fine. Again not to say that it fixed anything. Someone had the idea of running injector cleaner through the bike as you would a car. Could this harm anything or do you think it would actually help?

if you have not already done so remove the tank and fuel pump and clean the tank. replace the fuel pump filter with new. use the pre-filter mentioned previously to filter new fuel. i haven't used injector cleaner so i can't speak to your question. typically when the injector goes bad it's not a dirty injector issue that would be resolved by a "cleaning".

Just to update on my issue. I have not seen a rise in oil levels therefore I have ruled out a bad injector. I did replace the fuel filter ($40) and have since put about 7 hours on the bike with no issues. She's running like a raped ape. So all seems well. I am at my 10 hour interval for an oil change and currently have the bike torn down to do a little re-greasing and cleaning. Hopefully this resolves my issue for good and the fuel pump keeps going strong. This thing requires more attention and money than my girlfriend! ](*,)
