    gearing choices -- front sprocket

    by dean68 » Sun Aug 12, 2007 7:52 pm

just wanted to see if anyone has played with the front sprocket to change up the gearing.

i just got a used 95 crf 450 and do a fair amount of trail riding-no racing. seems that 1st gear is so tall with the stock 13t/48t set up.

what if i went to 14 or 15?

I would like to have a shorter 1st gear for the tight stuff.

if this doesn't cure or help i could/would consider going with flywheel weights. anyone gone this route?

    thanks for your help.

note----i'm thinking i may have been going the wrong way with the teeth on the front. i think to lower the gearing i'd have to go with a smaller front OR larger rear sprocket. is there a front sprocket smaller that the 13T?

    thanks

Honda didn't make a CRF450 in 1995. I assume you meant 2005. You're right though, the 13/48 is not for everybody.

I suggest raising the rear sprocket 3 teeth if you looking for more low end grunt. The final drive ratio can be calculated by dividing the # of rear sprocket teeth, by the front.

    13/48 gearing = 3.69 ratio
    13/51 gearing = 3.92 ratio
    12/48 gearing = 4.00 ratio

The higher the ratio, the taller the gearing. Taller gearing will get you low end torque and loose top end speed. Oppositely, for the lower gear ratio's. FYI....

thanks for the info. i realized my error shortly after posting my question.

i'm trying to get away with changing the front versus rear sprocket. this is for ease and cost effeciency. I've heard that 1 tooth on the front is equal to 3 on the rear. by the math I'm seeing how that works.

i'll try the 12 tooth front and see how things work. alot cheaper and quicker to change that sprocket than the rear---

i change my front sprocket often depending upon where i am riding. 1 down in the front = 3 up in the back. i love the 12 on my R in tights and normal trail riding. helps with all the clutching and shortens the gears quite a bit with small chain adjustment and easy to swap for track or anywheres else. i have not had any noticable chain wear issues or any other BS most people swear will haunt you.

i'm running a standard 13/48 setup. i'm sure that is good for motox, but i doubt i'll be doing stuff like that. i can see where i'd like that set up with out any tights.

but when you are in tight it is surprising that the 1st gear is so tall. i'm guessing that the 4 stroke in mx applications can use the "tall" nature of 1st for hammering through turns. Not exactly how i'll be handling creeks, trees, ravines etc.

where is a good online store for parts etc? there are so many that I'm not real sure which to use?

    thanks for your input.
