    hot starting

    by ry323 » Tue May 29, 2007 11:09 am

I have a 2006 honda crf450r and I was just wondering if anyone has tips on starting 450s in hare scramble starts and it seems when it is hot and you go down or stall it, it seems to take me forever to start and I burn up a ton of energy.

:D Good news theres an easy solution, practice and pray  There is a difference from a hot bike and a warmed up bike... So start it let it get warm and then shut it down. Try starting it WITHOUT the hot start. If your jetting is on point it should fire the first time. If you need the HS use it, don't try any starts in gear, it will not work. I've raced a few HS's on my 450r and smoked those headlighted freaks on X's, No offense... I have had excellent luck and the bike has started the first kick at each start. Practice the whole thing, from standing in front of the bike with both hands on the handlebars, kickstart OUT and bike in neutral, get comfortable throwin your leg over the bike and kickin it all in one easy movement. You don't see the pros on 2-smokes using electric starts (most) so don't feel intimidated by those sweet lazy headlights, you can pass them!

The main thing is , Don't Panic!! , don't touch the throttle ,,Don't try to start it in gear!! ,, and when kicking , give a FIRM kick ,*with the hotstart pulled , and hold it till it fires* full stroke kick , don't try to start it like a 2 smoke , ,your pushing 12 to 1 compression, and it needs a powerful smooth stroke to start first time , i ride both X and R and dont have a problem using the kick on either, when they are warm/hot .

Spend some time practicing starting it ,ride the bike , then stop and lay the bike on its side till gas flows from the overflow ,and it dies,*or just leave it in gear and lay on its side, and let go of the clutch*(your simulating crashing without throwing the bike on the ground ,and breaking parts) then pick it up and try starting , ,,,,also try running the bike till its warmed up , hit the kill switch , then try to fire it right back up,as fast as u can get it in Neutral, and get the kickstart out , its just like learning to get out of the gate smoothly , u need to relax under pressure *Don't Panic*, or your getting passed ! , your bike most often won't start if you panic start it .

If it doesn't start the very first kick DON'T PANIC ! , just breath and go thru the motions again,,,,and it will start!

When u see the guys pushing their bike off the track after a crash , they most likely paniced and flooded it ,,,,Relax ! Breath!! Kick !!

i love my R but it took me a while to figure out the perfect start. now it is a 2 kick start after stalling though 7 miles of 1st and 2nd gear tights. bump it out of gear, 2-4 panic kicks with hot start lever to force in some cool air to the carb, then find your compression and with the hot start still pulled kick it to start and rev it once before letting go of start lever. works everytime within 2 kicks to start it no matter how hot. just DONT TOUCH THE GAS. the biggest thing though is my bike will not start in gear if it is hot.

I don't know if this is much of a tip..but i've never had a problem with hot starts always get it on the first to third try. Use the hot start and not give it a lot of gas just a little...i'm sure that this will vary between different 450 R's and there set ups but it works for me. keep trying and i'm sure you will find a technic that will work best with your bike...so try different things and best of luck to you.

Had a buddy teach me a trick, put all four fingers on the brake lever when kicking. If i even crack the gas just a hair it will take a few kicks. Mine will start in gear, but if i put it in neutral it`s a lot easier.
