    Gear Ratio question

    by jarich42 » Tue May 01, 2007 2:33 pm

I'm thinking about changing the rear sprocket from a 48 to either a 50 or 51 tooth and was wondering who else has done this and what you think? The stock gear ratio is 3.69, with 50 tooth rear it's 3.86 and with 51 tooth rear it's 3.92. I'm wanting to be able to come out of a turn in second gear and have the bike rev up a little quicker, have more grunt, before hitting the next jump. I'm leaning toward the 50 tooth but I read that the CRF 450 SX bikes usually run the 51 tooth rear. I also realize that they probably never see second gear. Any thoughts....

I ride mostly trails, but I have a 50T rear and I love it. It gave it more bottom end and I can lug it a bit more. I imagine it would work pretty good for the tracks too.

just put on a 49 tooth and can come out of corner no problem. across the desert noticed a lot of loss off the top end but really worth it for jumping and track
