    New top end questions

    by iceman » Mon Apr 23, 2007 8:02 am

I finally got around to checking the valve clearance in my bike. It had been suggested to me by several friends that I may actually need new valves as well. So, all of the valve clearenses seem to be good except one. One of the intake valves has absolutely no space in it. I cant even fit the smallest feeler gauge in there. Is this problem even adjustable, or do I need a new valve. In addition to that, i decided that I wanted to inspect the valves for damage (great idea, not!!) So now I have the entire engine apart. I have a ton of hours on the bike and have only changed the oil and air filter regularly. So my questions are, one how do i know if i need a new piston, two how do I know if the cylendar needs any work (It seems totally smooth inside). At this point I am very frustated and would actually like to replace the piston and the valves since I have gone through all the work. Any suggestions or Ideas would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the long drawn out explanation.

Well, I could give the spiel, but you've actually made your own mind up. Change the piston and install new valves. Go with the Kibblewhites stainless valves if the price doesn't scare you off. The Kibblewhite valves aren't that expensive, it's the springs that you have to buy the first time, that run up the price. These stainless valves should at least double your service time.

To briefly answer you question, though, you can get a shim kit and shim the valves back into clearance a few times before having to replace. Personally, I would just do the overhaul at the point you are at and the fact that you have that many hours.

I agree with Joe. Since you've got the thing torn down, don't waste the gaskets and re-assemble just to shim. Send the head in or buy a new one outfitted already with the new stuff. Ron Hamp sells a lot of pre-assembled stainless equipped heads, or you can take your head to a pro and have the seats cut and KibbleWhite's (or equivalent) installed.
