It it true you can tame down a crf 450r by putting different sprockets on it? and do you need to go up in teeth or down? thanks.

    Hey T,

I don't think it's taming it, rather putting the power somewhere else. More teeth on the rear (51-52t) give the bike a lot of bottom end. Less teeth add more top end to the bike.

    Anytime Money,

Although I probably wouldn't go past 51t unless you are converting your 450 into a Ditch Witch.

The reason I was asking is that I do alot of indoor arena cross riding and the 250r is a little to small for lugging my 190lbs but around. I had a chance to ride a 2007 yz 450f the other day but i was hard to get a good idea of what a real 450 would be like because the guy had all of his controls all jacked up, the throttle tube was way too far back the clutch and brake levers were way to far down, and he had his forks and shock set up for woods riding. But from what I could tell from the power side was that it had a tremendous amount of low end power and torque. i'd probably want to mellow that low end out a little. would changing that rear sprocket change that much?

Someone on here will be able to answer that better than me. The 450 has mega power, no way around it. I went from a 48t to a 50t and loved it. I ride mostly trails.

Here is my advice, If you are getting to the point where you feel like you are telling the bike what to do, not the bike telling you what to do it's time to move up to the big leagues. By this I mean always in the top rpm's, ripping through the gears, etc... If it is just a few spots on the track where a little extra juice would come in handy because you weigh 190, you should probably stay on a 250. Good luck!
