Hi guys. I just picked me up and 05 CRF 450 R and I luv it. Been to the dunes a couple of times and it rocks.

The pipe is stock on it and I was wondering what pipe and header most of you are useing or which ones do you suggest. Also any to stay away from.

Thanks for any info.

I've found the stock to be plenty good for me. I've never ridden dunes. Mostly woods / some track is what I ride.

Welcome.
Stock still. When I do finally buy one, it'll either be the FMF 4.1 system or the WB carbon pro. For overall gains, the WB is the one to have. I'll probably get the FMF. FMF has more options regarding inserts. I ride trails a bunch too and need the spark arrestor insert. WB is louder, IMO. Both save a bunch of weight...

I'm also struggling with parting with that much money for something that is already fast enough. I'm waiting until I wreck this one!

There's a lot of good pipes, but here's a vote for the Akrapovic.
While expensive ,these pipes are just beautiful as far as craftsmanship and fit goes, and here's what MXA (who gave it their Five Star rating) said about it :
"The Akrapovic Evoution exhaust completely changes the power of the CRF450.The stock chug a lug is replaced by an ultra-responsive powerband that comes on instantly and continues pulling until the rpm hits the rev limiter. This thing rips".
That guys is a heck of a review. With the quiet insert it is shockingly quiet, I mean quieter than the stock 07R pipe.
What's a trip is without the quiet insert it comes in under the AMA 99DB limit, pretty cool.
All the Akrapovic pipes, whether Carbon,Ti, or stainless all are the same pipe, with identical lengths, diameters ,etc. With the X you can get either a high rpm boost header or a low rpm boost header.

Doug,
Do you have the spark arrestor insert?

Posted: Wed Feb 21, 2007 6:06 am
Yes,and all the Evolutions come with a combination insert and spark arrestor. I got this one from Ken.
I ran my bike with and without the insert, and honest to God couldn't tell the performance difference, what really blows me away is how quite the sucker is.
While I'm sure no human dyno, the bike feels like it accelerates through the rpm range quicker than stock, though it does this while being so quiet.
I'm obviously a slave to good looking add ons, but I needed a spark arrestor for the AMA Hare Scrambles, where they randomly sound check us. I got an e-mail from a buddy in South Eastern Ohio who got sound checked with an insert installed Akrapovic on his 06 WR450 ,and he said he came in at 93 db even, good enough for me .
I though you might like this pipe 124 ! Doug

I've always thought Akrapovik made good stuff. I used to have a GSXR750 and that had a povik' pipe on it. Used to sell a lot of them to the street bike guys when I worked at the bike shop too. I'm also a fan of Yosh' systems as well. They both made the jump to offroad products recently.

Now that I think about it, you really can't go wrong with any of the big names. FMF, WB, Yosh, Povik, etc..they all make good stuff with products that can suit our (us, as consumers) needs.

And that is quite true, there's really no junk out there amoung the big names, is there ?
If you get a chance to see any of the Akrapovic Evolution series in person, check them out. Having sold these goodies before I'll bet you've got a good eye for quality, and you won't be disappointed. Even the carbon fiber hangar is the nicest looking carbon fiber I've ever seen.
Dirt Bike tested this pipe too, the all carbon one,and they said the same thing on the power characteristics improvement, and they said the carbon fiber work was the best they'd ever seen. Doug

I'm sold on the Dr.D system myself. I really like the throttle response I get over the stock. But then again the pipe was on the bike when I got it so it's not like I went out and dropped $500 on a new pipe.

Okay, so please tell us then how you decided that you "like the throttle response you get over stock" then, since
it's not like I went out and dropped $500 on a new pipe

What is it "like" then ?

Pardon the interruption, this will only take a second.

Wayman Racing, if you do decide to get an aftermarket pipe and header, please consider selling me your old pipe and header. (As long as it truly is an '05R).

Thanks!

The bike I bought had the Dr. D on it. The guy who sold me the bike gave me the stock header and pipe as an extra. I had a bad get off and ended up bending the mounting bracket for the Dr. D so I put the stock header and pipe back on and got the Dr. D fixed. After I received the repaired Dr. D system I went to the track and rode one set with the stock pipe and header on. I then replaced it with the Dr. D system and did another set. I felt that the stock pipe and header was a little more "tame" for a lack of better terms. The bike was alot easier to control. The Dr. D was louder but I felt that the throttle response was crisper. I apologize for the long response but it appears that I rustled some feathers. I personnaly did a back to back comparison and I like both systems just fine.

Personally I have always gotten good results for the WB pipes. Especially the Race series. Power is excellent, they are very durable pipes and sound really good.

I have heard a lot of good things about the MRD pipes also.

IF you are after power, give them a shot. I have not heard a bad thing about them yet.
