Had the same problem today. Checked the valves and they were in spec. Changed the plug. Still same problem.

Pulled the carb off, tore it down and cleaned. Blowing out the main jet and anything else that looked like a tube. Sprayed the heck out of it with carb cleaner.

Put back together. Started in 3 kicks.

Good move, that sounds like a plugged pilot was fixed !
I hear you on the military and 800mg Ibuprofen, I'm still in and nothings changed.
All that aside, checking the valves on an 04 no matter how seldomly ridden is good advice. On a bike that did start great and now doesn't after checking for fuel in the tank and the petcock the next things to check would be for me the pilot and the plug, with a valve check the very next thing. Sometimes(when valves ar adjusted right) I have to hold her wide open 2 stroke style and give her a few kicks and she fires right up. But don't do it to much she will flood fast.

Diesel, since we have an accelerator pump, have you tried three whacks of the throttle and then try to light it?
