Do check the valves. How does it start? If it starts within a reasonable amount of kicks (4 or 5 maybe,) the valves "should" be relatively okay. If you really have to kick that crap out of it to get it going...valves could be ready for replacement. Good luck on the check...I hope it comes out okay for you.

it starts relitively easy. even when it's hot. 1 maybe 2 kicks. even without the choke on. just gotta keep the rpm's up but it crakles and pops and then dies. wierd! i don't think my sons riding it this weekend.

If yes, sounds like an air leak. Check the intake tract to make srue the carb didn't slip out of the boot. Check all the clamps, etc, etc...

    Check the exhaust flange bolts.

If all checks out OK, check compression.

After the rest of the discussion, check the timing.

ok. i put a 175 main and adjusted the air fuel 1 1/4 out. it fires right up with choke on only. i turned the idle up and got it to idle with out the choke but at a high idle. when i rev it, it doesn't immidiately rev down. it idles high for a few seconds and then returns to idle. sounds like some carb issues to me but i will go through the motions and check the valves, timming and compression. if that's all good, i'll go back to the carb settings and check the pilot. any other suggestions?

once again, thanks for all the help.

After that reply, it really sounds like an air leak/carb problem. Reeeeaaallly check everything! Good luck!

One other remote "possibility"...check your hot start lever/cable and make sure it's not binding/stuck in the "active" position.

hot start's working right. i pulled the carb and cleaned all jets again. i compared the pilot jet with another one and it seems to be restricted. so i am going to blow the carb out and put the new pilot in and see if that helps. from what i understand, the pilot is for low idle speed. so hopefuly this works.

That idle issue says lean to me. What pilot do you have in it? Check for carb boot leaks, etc.

I would try a 45 pilot to start with. The fast idle then slows down screams too lean. Put the 45 in, and adjust your fuel screw to about 1 3/4 out. If there is improvement, then tweak the fuel screw from there. If you need to open the fuel screw more than about 2 turns, you may need another step larger pilot.from there. I run a 48 pilot in my X.

A simple way to check for air leaks is by using a spray bottle with water in it, squirt water around the areas that should be sealed, if you have an air leak it will suck the water in and change the idle or make it die altogether, you'll then have a place to start making repairs if this is your problem.

took the carb completely out. what a pain! anyway, cleaned it up pretty good, re-installed it and same problem. i started messing with the pilot screw and it changed everything. it no idles without the choke on but still surges and pops like heck on de-cel. i'll mess with the pilot screw a little more tomorrow and see what i can do with it. the muffler is crunched a little so i wonder if it can have anything to do with this issue. i'll try the spray bottle trick to. thanks for the help.

    What Joe said!

Change out the pilot to a 45. The fuel screw @2 turns.

A crunched muffler shouldn't affect things as long as its not bad. A crunched header will.
