My small 10 yo son is on the 80. The bike is a little big for him but he has years of experience from the 50 then the 70. My 7 yo is on the 70. My son picked up the clutch in a few hours but again he had the benefit of having everything else down pat first.
If he gets both feet or a foot and a toe on the other side down on the 80 I would not go back to the 70. He will grow out if it very quickly. My 7 yo has the 70 figured out.
However come to think of it where you ride could play a role in deciding. If you have open areas to ride the clutched bike will be easier to learn. If your in tight technical stuff he may struggle allot at first stalling etc and get turned off. That’s the last thing you want especially in getting the wife’s buy in to keep your fun going!
The 70 is stall proof and so easy to ride. Would definitely get the confidence up quickly!
It would cost you a bit more to get the 70 for a season to get his confidence up the trade it on an 80 the year after. Maybe a used 70 to start? These hold their value well and you could end up even or costing a hundred or 2 for the use of it for a year.
