    xr 100 valve adjustment?

    by Howes » Sat May 15, 2010 8:20 pm

my 84 xr 100 runs great but when i start it for the first time during the day or after its been sitting for a while it idles real high until it starts to warm up. after it warm from riding it it idle real low, almost low enough to stall. also it never needs the choke and if it doesnt start after the first 5 or 6 kicks it floods and needs a new plug. usually starts first kick every time though. was thinking it could use a valve adjustment and was wondering if someone could walk me threw it. i have done many valve adjustments on my 450x so i understand the concept. dont these xr 100 have a set screw for the adjustment?

The 100 is a million times easier than the 450, if you can do the valves on that you'll have no problems. Firstm set it to TDC and line up all the marks. Then, pull the head cover and loosen the nut on both of the valve tappets. Unscrew the adjuster and when you get the intake to .002 and exhaust to .003 clearance (I think thats what it is), then hold the adjuster with needle nose pliers and tighten the nut back up. Re-check clearances, button everything back up, and if it starts up then you did alright :)
