    BBR 120cc Big Bore Kit...

    by crfsonly » Mon Aug 29, 2005 5:38 pm

BBR has just introduced their 120cc Big Bore kit for the CRF100. This kit is for the XR100 and CRF100 from years '93-06. I'm getting more information tomorrow about actual performance gains but early conversations with BBR indicate significant performance gains. You can check out the details of the kit here:

As an option to the kit you can add a 26mm Keihin carb kit and heavy duty clutch springs.

    Ken,

This could be a nice Santa gift this year for my boys and their XR100's. Does BBR provide good installation instructions or do you simply rebuild with the shop manual and replace stock parts with BBR?

Also, how necessary is the carb replacement option to see the benefits of the BBR piston upgrade?

will...we should have a kit for a product review next week sometime. it will be a pretty involved review but we'll be reviewing the installation, instructions, power increase, and fun factor.

i've rebuilt this small bores before and it's pretty straight forward if you have the honda shop guide. if you don't have the tools for installing the valves a local shop will do that for you. the rest is pretty simple really.

we just finished the install of the BBR 120cc big bore kit. we are still doing testing for the review but the initial test rider's comments, "wow, that's incredible" that's the unbiased response of 13 year old test rider after her first ride on her new 100. right now the bike is completely stock with the exception of the big bore kit. so, jetting, intake, carb, exhaust etc. are all stock.

we want to get some more time with this motor and then we'll rejet, open the intake, and exhaust. right now it's a big thumbs up. oh yea, installation was as easy as it gets.

    more to follow.

So how is the big bore kit working after 7 months? Did you do any other mods?

    Ken,

Look forward to reading your review on the 120 big bore kit. Please include any tricks that would be helpful for the installation.

We will be ordering one later this year for my son's birthday. Hope he doesn't read this post and spoils the surprise.

the install was a breeze if you have one important tool...a valve spring compressor. if not get that part of the install done at a local shop. other than that if you can read and follow the instructions in the shop manual it's a fun saturday project.

the kit is running great! our test pilot has logged some serious mileage on it this week and comes back from riding with a bigger smile on her face each day.

we'll probably post the initial write up that includes just the big bore kit upgrade without any jetting changes, air filter, or exhaust changes. then we'll add some of these mods and update the review.

    Ken,

It sounds like you are running the 120 big bore with the stock jets and filter. Is that the case?

Valve spring compressor.......is that something I would ever use again (i.e top end job?) Assuming it is not too expensive, would probably just pick one up for the garage.

will...yes, right now we are running with stock everything with the exception of the big bore kit. i want to take one step at a time so i can accurately tell you the results of each modification. the valve spring compressor could be handy if you ever plan on doing your own valve replacement on any motocycle. i'll get it in our catalog. we use the motion pro and it's about $140. Check your local shop for how much they would charge you for this service and offset the cost of this tool with that cost.

pger555...it is taking some time but we want to be sure this kit is a durable as the stock configuration. the only way to do this is log time on the bike. our test rider is putting in at least three rides a week. with in the next week we should have something published. it will be a 'living' review in that we'll keep adding to it as we make additional mods that would be typical for this type of mod.

    Ken,

I know you got your hands full with the growing business and the bike build-off project. Any updates on the 120 big bore kit review for the 100?

My 12 year old is ready for a bigger bike. He is not tall enough for the 250x sitting in the garage but will probably be ready a year from now assuming I install the lowering kit, raise the forks and cut the seat. In the meantime, I am thinking do I spend the $ putting him in a CRF150 or slap the 120 big bore kit to hold him over this summer? Any updates on the one you installed?
