Installed a BBR 120cc Kit. WOW! What a difference

    by Billys2006CRF100F » Mon Jul 16, 2007 10:10 pm

It took about 6 hours and other than having to take a 1/4" off the cam chain tension spring, it was pretty straight forward. It started on the second kick. I was surprised! I did have to rejet the carb, adjust the mixture screw and idle screw to get it to idle correctly. I was able to drive it around in my back yard but wasn't able to really open it up yet. It will wheelie me in 2nd gear with a 15F/46R sprockets and I weigh 235lbs. It's my Son's bike but, it's a blast to ride even for me.
I paid $299.00 for it from this website. I would highly recommend this mod to anyone that has common hand tools and a basic mechanical understanding. The only special tool I needed was a valve spring compression tool which I purchased off Ebay for $20.00. I also installed a Hi-Flow Oil Pump for add insurance and piece of mind.

Wow your a great add for CRFs only! How much does billy weigh? My son is almost 13 and weighs about 110lbs,he like jumps and trails.how are those bbr springs?Did the help alot? how about that new found power (120 kit)?, how much of a gain do you think? this sounds cheaper than upgrading his bike for now!

You have a good point there about plugging CRFs Only. Perhaps they should give me a discount on a future purchase. ;)
My son is 5'2" and is 125 lbs. The BBR120 Kit is worth every penny in my book. The springs were a huge help as well. No more bottoming out and the bike rebounds smoothly, no bucking like I had feared. It's like he got a brand new bike. It rides great and has a lot more power.

Thanks! food for thought, i had been thinking about a 150f (still air cooled) but this sounds like a better option, have you riden a stock 150f? stock just sounds boaring! I wish they made a 150x or green sticker 150r that i could afford!

I hesitated for a while, like you, on buying a larger bike. I weighed the options and found modding up his current bike would be considerably more affordable. When he does eventually out grow the bike he can go buy his own and I'll keep this one for myself to putt around on. :D

Did this help alot? did you do both front and rear at the same time? i may have to sport these for him...do you have anymore tips or feed back on the kit now that its been a couple weeks?

I was thinking about doing that to the 100 my girlfriend rides but after two rides and two sets of bars I don't think she needs to go faster. :)

We finally got to take it out and open it up some and do some trail riding. Both my Son and I are both totally convinced it's like riding a new bike. I still need to fine tune the jetting of the pilot curcuit. The middle throttle and top end are dead on.
We replaced the front and rear springs at the same time. It's definitely 30% stiffer. It takes a bit to get used to but it won't be bottoming out like before. My son is 5'2" and wieghs 125 lbs. and he's happy with both the motor and suspension.
I think it's great to have your son save up for this mod like my son did. I think Billy appreciated it more knowing he contributed to purchase cost.

my son originally saved to pay for half of the bike. I think it defiantly made him appreciate it more! personally i would love to just order all the parts right now but you know how it is; i would get flack from the other half! so i wait for him to save. where do you guys ride? we are in northern California.

I understand how it is to convince the wife that we can spend tons of money my Son's bike. It's an up hill battle.

We ride in a few places. We live in central California, about 30 minutes south of Fresno. Miami Trails, Hollister, and Clear Creek are a few places we've riden .

Stock is 14F/50R. The bike has a 15F/46R set up now. Both my son and I notice an instant difference in the shifting points and increase top end speed. I like the fact that 1st gear is usable now before you rev out and have to shift. With the stock gearing 1st gear was worthless unless you were climbing a tree.

what was your deciding factor on sprocket choice? How does it do on big hills? i guess the 120 kit makes the difference?

A stock CRF/XR 100 is geared way too low. 1st gear is nearly unusable and 5th gear tops out between 45 to 52 mph. I chose the largest front sprocket that was available for the bike (15T). We dropped the rear down to a (46T). It's still great hill climbing. It lugged me up a steep zig-zag trail in second gear. We still haven't found a hill it couldn't climb. Best of all is, my son had it up to 57.1 mph and it hadn't even maxed out yet. That was before the BBR120 kit was installed.
